I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5930, Windows won't open, says to insert Start up disk. Can't find it.

Solution
If you see a plain black screen saying that right after you power on the PC, it means the system does not detect a Hard Drive, DVD, or any other bootable media. Try tapping F2 or DELETE right when you turn it on (varies by laptop vendor, but is F2 for my old TOSHIBA) to get into the BIOS and see if the HDD is recognized. Also the ISO files to install windows can be downloaded online legally for free, but the Digital River (Microsoft's ISO downloads) have been apparently taken down, and I have used this link a few times to download an ISO. Try burning that to a DVD or copy it to a USB and run a SMART disk utility like CrystalDisk. The drive is probably failing, so get your data off ASAP. IT should be able to plug into a standard Desktop...

IT should be able to plug into a standard Desktop PC; I used my old laptop HDD to run a Boinc rig on an old Core 2 Duo Desktop. Cheers!

Crystal Disk (select portable edition, copy to a folder on root of install media, and select repair your pc and then command prompt to access it): http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html

Windows 7 ISO (does not matter if Windows 7 wasnt on the PC originally, will still let you access Command Prompt to do diagnostics):

Hope this helps!
