Hello everyone,

I'm currently preparing a new configuration for a gaming PC. I'm a gamer mainly playing RPG, wargames and action-aventure games, like Baldur's Gate, the Assassin's Creed franchise, Plague Tale, Hell Blade or even the Total War franchise. I'm not a great fan of FPS and when I play them, it's only in solo. No multiplayers games and no e-gaming competition for me!

I'm not looking for the very best, just a very good configuration that will last a bit. And I want to create a silent and cool configuration. No RGB for me: I hate fancy looking stuff.

After looking around the internet I ended up with this configuration:

AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
MSI B650 Tomahawk WIFI
be quiet! Dark Rock 5
Corsair Vengeance 32Go (2x16Go) DDR5 6000MHz
ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce 5070 Ti 16GB OC Edition
Samsung 990 EVO PLUS - 2 To
Be quiet ! Power Zone 2 850 W / Platinum
Fractal Design Define 7 Compact

I'm quite satisfied except that I wonder if i should take tha B850 version of the motherboard.
And I like the fractal Design casings (I currently own a R5). Unfortunately, the R5 is already a bit too big for my desk and the Define 7 is even bigger... So I went for the compact. The components fit inside but I'm wondering about the cooling.

In short, I can't wait to hear your opinion or advice on my (maybe) future configuration. 😀

So a few things here. What is your budget? You need a case with a front mesh panel for airflow. New parts these days use a lot more power than they used to so high airflow is a requirement. I added a nice case with lots of airflow that is small and not too flashy. I also added the best performing air cooler on the market. A good quality PSU that is small and quiet. Enough RAM to have no problems running games, chrome tabs, discord, and a triple A single player game. You also indicated a lot of types of games that massively benefit from an X3D CPU such as Baldur's Gate, and RTS style games like Total war. The 7800X3D is a prime candidate to power through those types of games for years. An OS drive with a DRAM cache, and a games storage drive 4TB. A cheaper X870 motherboard for PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and plenty of storage and connectivity options. This pc can be costed down, just need to know a budget.

With the money saved compared to your build, you could buy more storage and/or (more) RAM, or 9800X3D, etc.

Another thing you ask, where are you located? I’m assuming the USA?

If so look to see if there is a Microcenter nearby to take advantage of combo deals.

On the gpu, keep an eye out for the and rx 9070xt. At least looking on pcpartpicker right now you’d be better off getting the 5070ti. But on Memorial Day for example I was able to get the card below from Microcenter for $699 which was over $100 less than the 5070ti and only a little slower.

Thank you for your answers and advice. 😀

A few answers:

You would be assuming wrongly... 😉

I'm French (so please excuse my sometime unusual style), and I used to be a regular on the French version of Tom's Hardware,. Unfortunately, they closed down the forum, and that's why I'm came to you guys for advice... 😏

This makes the pricing advice more delicate since prices are quite different in Europe, depending on euro change rate and a lot of other factors. But I do look for good deals too.

What is your budget?

Around 2000 €, with the possibility to go beyond if necessary. But here, more that pricing optimization, I appreciate the technical advice.

You also indicated a lot of types of games that massively benefit from an X3D CPU such as Baldur's Gate, and RTS style games like Total war. The 7800X3D is a prime candidate to power through those types of games for years

Good point: i will take it into consideration. As I said, my main worry is temperature/silence, and that's why I settled for the 9700X instead of the 7800X3D. But you do have a point here and I will look into it.

Its also why i settled for the Asus TUF Gaming instead of the more basic (and cheaper) 5070Ti cards: It has good ratings in silence and coolness (the nice OC and general quality is a bonus).

An OS drive with a DRAM cache, and a games storage drive 4TB.

I didn't think of It, Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it.

For the motherboard, after putting so thoughts into it, I decided to stick with B650 or B850. The price of the B850 is going down here, I will most probably settle for it. One question there: do any of you know why the B850 don't support the 5.1 speakers anymore? The B650 still had the jacks...

And last but not least: the casing. thank you @helper800 and @LOGAN54321 for suggesting these casing: I didn't think of the Lian Li... and I didn't even know that Jonsho existed! 😳 These casing are nice and understated, exactly as I like them. Unfortunately; they both come with a glass panel, and they don't seem to have a solid panel version. I could maybe live with a glass panel... but not my wife and I greatly respect her opinion on my future PC esthetics (especially since she's reading behind my shoulder and I have great survival instinct! 😀)

I was eying the Be Quiet Pure Base 501. Even if not mesh, it's supposed to have good cooling. What do you think? And are mesh casings quiet enough?

Thank you again for advising me and sorry for the delay in answering.

This would be my updated part selection. A 1tb and 4TB drive is not within the budget at least with PCpartpicker prices. As far as the noise from the 5070 ti goes, making your own fan curve and undervolting the card is the best way to get any card to run much quieter. The most quiet stock card is the MSI Vanguard SOC 5070 ti but that is very expensive and hard to get in the EU. Another really good one is either color of the Gigabyte Aorus master cards.

Pretty good, but I'm still of the opinion a 9070XT offers better value. You can find the steel legend for just above 700€ in some places in europe.

I go on what I can see and find right now. The cheapest I saw the 5070 ti on some French websites was 835 and the 9070 XT was at 800. I feel that unless the 9070 XT is at least 10% cheaper than the 5070 ti, mind as well get the better feature set of the Nvidia card. Its up to you at the end of the day.

"my main worry is temperature/silence"——It's no necessity to buy a more expensive card. Spend the money to buy a fine-designed case and fine fans.
I'll pick Cougar MX600/MX600 mini case, it offers similar cooling performance like Lianli L216 or Asus Proart 602. Then I'll buy a powerful fan and put it on the back of the mx600mini case, for example, phanteks t30.

There are plenty of cases and fans for us to choose in China, and a better designed copy of mx600 is Aigo's 扶摇百里, which has similar cooling performance and extra cable limiters in the back room of the case. I don't know what is its name in English.

Whatever you decide building, use an AIO to cool the processor. I've been building PC's since the 386 came out, and I can tell you the #1 improvement is an AIO to keep the noise down. Mine barely even runs - actually its running the most at boot up until I boot into Windows!

AIO's pump is noisy when the system is under lite load.

Sorry, but I mean that the pump is a bit more noisier than tower coolers when in lite load, especially those pump that doesn't support pwm.
Again, you're not helping the OP make a sound decision to use an AIO instead of a lot of fans that make noise. Look at the charts on AIO noise that GN created and you'll see an AIO is not any noisier than fans, and in most cases is half the noise 40-45dB is nothing when the room with audio is most likely above 55dB IRL

The bottom line is - an AIO when sized properly for the equipment is silent compared to case fans. And under load you won't hear it because of the sound of the game you're playing!
Be real!

Ohh... and what AIO do you have??

I have a Deepcool LQ360 II AIO, it's three fans are noisy when speed is above 50%, and when in light load, I can sometimes hear the pump's burping bubbles sound.
I've replaced the fan with better ones, then the fan noise get suppressed, but the cooling performance got no improvement on my 9950x3d. The original fan on this AIO is completely awful.

Later I switched to Coolmaster H612A, and the world got quiet.

Maybe I should buy a better one when I decide to use an AIO next time. Do you have any recommendation?

Yeah... you get what you pay for, and don't orient it wrong or you'll mess up the pump. The unit I have is amazing.
The Asus ROG RYUJIN III 360 AIO is just okay, particularly when you consider its price. There are better AIOs for both cooling and noise in the same price range and many AIOs that are cheaper, perform the same or better, and come with longer warranties, like the AF2/3. One of the best AIOs on the market for performance is the Gigabyte waterforce 2, but they are expensive at around 200 dollars.

You must understand that I can only use a small fraction of the AIO's available because of their size and fitment. Have you seen the available space with my motherboard in a Fractal Terra Jade? There was 2 units that would fit without me cutting a hole in the side - one that would fit if I cut a hole. I cut a hole (it's actually a square.) That is the max temp the GPU has ever reached, while stressing with the Heaven benchmark - max settings 4K resolution

The point I was making with my original post still stands - an AIO will be Much More quiet than a whole case of fans, and provide just as good, if not better performance for what the OP is looking for - a QUIET computer!

No need for an AIO for that cpu. A decent dual tower cpu cooler is more than sufficient.
