I am building a pc for the first time right now, and I ordered a fan for the cpu. The fan has a 4 pin connector and the motherboard a 5 pin! How can I get these to work? Is there an adapter or something? Thanks.

Solution
I got an entire cooler. Heat sink and fan. My motherboard is the Dell optiplex 9010 motherboard and my cooler is just an intel socket 1155 cooler
Dell uses proprietary 5-pin fan connector.
You could have got a Dell fan or compatible fan for Dell Optiplex 9010 .

Since you already purchased a standard 4-pin fan then you should get a Dell compatible 5-pin to 4-pin fan adapter.
You could get one from Amazon or eBay and many other places.

Some ppl are manually adept at such things, some are not and don't want to risk destroying the one thing that does work, the new cooler. A wiring adapter is a safer bet for them.

Also, many newer coolers are coming with sleeved or all black wires and one wrong move can have ugly results.
