I need help connecting to a network through a VPN

I have a tablet that needs to be connected to a server to use an inventory app. The tablet is on a Verizon plan so I do have access to the internet. The problem is when I type the URL for the app that needs to be connected to the server, it won't connect unless I'm in range of the wifi network that is on the server.

My plan was to set up a VPN on the server and connect to it on the tablet so I can use the app. I was able to set up the VPN and connect to it, but if I get out of range of the server's wifi network, then it disconnects. Basically, I need to use Verizon's network/data to connect the VPN and I need help getting it to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Use something like teamviewer to connect to a system(your work PC) on the same network. and use that system remotely to access the server.

The thought crossed my mind, but to get that to work I would have to set up a computer and put the app on that computer. I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong with this VPN.
