Question I need help diagnosing power issue on new build

Hello,

I am building a new work PC and seem to have a power issue. Whenever I boot the system, all the components turn on, but I get nothing on my TV (using it as a test monitor). The light on my chassis blinks very fast a few seconds after I power on which is what is telling me I have some kind of power issue. Initially, I forgot to plug in the CPU power to the PSU, but when I would try to power on in that circumstance, I would not get the flashing light on my chassis. After I fixed that problem, by plugging in the 8-pin, I am getting the power issue.

By the way, it seems like the 4 + 4 pin that came with my PSU doesn't fit the CPU power slot on the motherboard perfectly in terms of the right sequence of squares/semi-circles. The one that just says 4 does, but the one that says 4+ does not. Specifically, on the motherboard, the slot for the 4+ has two square plugs and two semi-circle plugs, but the 4+ connector has all four semi-circles. The one that is just labeled 4 correctly has two squares, two semi-circles diagonal from each other. The plug where the 4+ would go is a mirror image on the motherboard, but not with the connector that came with my PSU. Could this have something to do with it?

You know, I think I might need to do that. It is a 13th gen chip on a MB that was originally designed for 12th gen. I am having trouble figuring out how to do it with this MB though.

My prior build had a more feature rich Asus board and I think I used EZ Flash, but my new board doesn’t seem to support it.

No you need a 12th gen cpu to get this done. See if there is a shop nearby that can do i for you for a small fee. Or get the cheapest 12th gen cpu you can buy and use that, look at return policy and see if you can return the cpu after that.

You also can return the motherboard and get either another one with appropriate chipset or same chipset with a "USB Bios Flashback" option.

I had missed your post earlier. I ended up contacting Asus support, they thought I should still have been able to update BIOS, they walked me through it and it didn’t work so they wanted to initiate an RMA.

I didn’t want to remove the motherboard, I thought maybe it really is the PSU because, after all, it’s not simply that it wasn’t working, it was that I was getting the flashing chassis lights indicating a power issue.

I got a new PSU, but the issue persisted. I have now ordered a new motherboard, different brand, and am hoping this works. This one has a more intuitive BIOS upgrade feature which I should be able to do with without any supporting component, so fingers crossed this fixes the issue.

Not really,

Then I must not be so great with searching, all the boards that I came across that were 12th and 13th gen supporting that were manufactured earlier than the last month or so seemingly needed a BIOS update to get POST with a 13th gen chip.

Is there a terminology or something you are seeing with these boards? It would certainly save some hassle on future builds if there was a way to see the BIOS version a particular board would ship with.

Like i mentioned before has this one "USB Bios Flashback" which is a way to update the bios without needing anything else than motherboard and power to it,

A how to for " Asrock USB Bios Flashback ", you just have to look into the manual to see what usb port on the back i/o to use.

This one has the newer chipset and so is the 13600K supported from first bios,

Well this is frustrating. I ended up getting my new motherboard (Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700), flashed it to the most recent BIOS using Gigabyte's Qflash Plus and still can't get POST.

I even tried flashing the prior version BIOS (the first BIOS to support 13th gen intel processors).

Now, the computer powers on, I see the chassis light come on, all fans spinning, but my monitor gets no signal and after about a minute the PC cycles off and then back on by itself, stuck in an infinite loop.

Could there be another bad component? I have tried a different PSU and motherboard at this point then my original build.

Thanks, it seems I will have to try replacing it. No pins look bent in the socket or on the CPU.

On both motherboards I have now tried, I was careful to place the CPU correctly the first time (with the triangle on the CPU lined up with the corner of the socket that has the same triangle symbol).

Do you think there could be any other explanation aside from a bad CPU that may be worth trying before ordering a new CPU?

With the first motherboard and first and second PSU, I would get the very fast flashing chassis light. With the second motherboard and the second PSU, I get this on/off cycle but with stable chassis light.

This is super frustrating now. I tried a new CPU as well, I am still having the same issue. At this point, the only components I have not tried replacing are the memory and the storage.

Could either memory or storage cause an issue like this? The memory, I have tried using one stick at a time already, The storage is not something I have dealt with before, one of those M.2 SSDs.

Don't know what else to try.
