Hi, i am going to get soon this mobo with my i7 4770k cpu and i have done some research and it seems you need to update the BIOS i just saw an explanation here:

http://www.asus.com/microsite/2014/MB/New_4th_gen_Intel_processor_compatibility/

And i would choose to update the BIOS with the Bios updater software because it seems more user friendly, but i want to know first if i would be able to install an OS and do all the basic stuff BEFORE updating the BIOS or my system will not boot at all if i dont update the BIOS and i have my i7 4770k on the mobo.

This seems like a mess but i want to know because maybe i should just get another mobo if this is too difficult to do honestly.

Solution
That motherboard has support for that CPU since BIOS 0301. I'd ask Asus if that board ships with at least that version. Otherwise, you'll need to buy a cheap CPU to use to update BIOS.

I don't see how you can flash the bios with out the board running if the bios that's on the board and don't support the chip you got most times you need a supported chip under the bios thats on the board in order to start the board to flash to the new bios that supports the chip you want to use

I hope I said this right

No you probably won't be able to boot without the proper BIOS.

I would insist on trying ASUS USB BIOS flashback ---- it is a very simple and easy process and you don't even need a cpu, ram or gpu installed. You just need standby 24 pin power. It is incredibly easy to do and you won't see anything on a screen -- it is all done through flashing leds and those are the only indicators.

I have made a video about the flashback for an ASUS P9x79LE board, and the process is almost identical to yours. the only difference is the location of the button and the renaming of the file. Please see my video here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzzVLHTkSzk&list=UUd9_471ACQ1vpYMuRYkXclw

Hope this helps

No, I belive most ASUS boards have a feature where you only need 24 pin power and thats all -- no cpu, no ram, no drives, no gpu. It is fantastic!

Correct me if I'm wrong about this board though!

Well i dont know because this link: http://www.asus.com/microsite/2014/MB/New_4th_gen_Intel_processor_compatibility/

shows 2 methods and the second one asks you to have "A running ASUS 8 Series motherboard-based system, with current 4th generation Intel Core processor installed" i can understand that as the system will indeed boot even if the BIOS is not updated but this option requires the 4th gen cpu to be on board.

Apologies, looks like B85 Plus doesn't have USB feature, only in windows, I didn't see the table at the bottom. Then there are the following options:

1) Go to a PC repair shop and see if they have a spare cpu they can use to update it. They will charge you a nominal fee
2) Buy a BIOS chip with the latest BIOS - available on Ebay or contact ASUS
3) Just try and see what happens with current cpu, at worse you won't boot but you are unlikely to damage anything.

To make things even more confusing i found this list with the cpu supported on that mobo:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/B85PLUS/HelpDesk_CPU/

And if you go to i7-4770k you will find out that it is supported since 0301 BIOS revision and it dosent put this:

"*Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool." message like with other cpus

So now im even more confused.

EDIT: if you go to the BIOS download section:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/B85PLUS/HelpDesk_Download/

You will find out that the oldest BIOS to download there is the 0309... soooo wtf is going on here.

asus one of many reasons I don't use thewre products anymore .. I helped a guy with one last week on memory and went to the memory list for his board and there were 7 different ones crazy do I look at this one or that one or what?? I been doing this for 14 years and was like w.t.f

I feel your pain seriously why not make things easy and straight forward... but i believe cyrofault is right, the thing to know is what BIOS revision comes with the mobo, in the download section it dosent seem to be the 0301 revision so MAYBE thats the one that cames with the mobo and the first revision.

Once again, I would suggest asking someone from Asus. They should be able to tell you, and that would be more trustworthy than Googling and hoping that you get that revision.
Someone else mentioned this, but you could also go to a computer shop, borrow a CPU with the same socket type, and then update the BIOS with a USB drive.

Im calling ASUS tomorrow, i actualy tried to send them an email but... oh lord i couldnt stand to fill all those things they ask you, specialy when you dont own the product yet -.- and you cant possibly know them.

Hey everyone i just called ASUS and they told me that my cpu is supported and that i dont have to update the BIOS or anything, well i hope its true since they have a big mess regarding cpus supported by that mobo.
