I need help, someone please!

Help me someone!!!!! I just cleaned out my computer ( i have done it before and it has always been fine) and now it keeps freezing in boot up, and i am due to sell it in 3 days time!!

I used an anti-static sleeve when i touched any hardware in the computer and only really touched the heatsink and fan for the CPU and the video card which i didnt actually touch with my hands. When it boots up it recognises everything and it fine but soetime during startup it just freezes!!!!

can someone please help me. I'm in my final yr of schoool and really dont need this happening right now and if its broken my friennd qwont buy it which means that i wont have enough money for my new pc which means im boned!!

yuo probably bumped the HSF off the cpu enough to create a giant pocke of heat....load up, go into the BIOS and just watch the temps....if its the cpui over heating it will slowly get hoter and hotter and shut down.

Als just to let you know....I have never used an anti-static sleeve....just do what you want barefoot on the floor...unless you have shag carpets and you drag your feet when you walk ALOT you dont need to worry about it. Its just the initial static discharge when you first touch the machine. Ground yourself then work....no problems.

2ndly what did you do that you didn't touch anythign with yoru hands? You used a swiffer?lol

Explain step by step in every stupid detail about how you cleaned...Remount your HSF and that might solve it.

hey ok here it what i did

1. Unplugged everything and opened up case.
2. Took off heat sink and fan
3. Wiped heatsink and fan over with cotton wool buds and removed large amounts of dust.
4. Blew into heatsink.
5. Used vacuum cleaner on heatsink
6. attached fan to heatsink and placed heatsink in its place over the cpu
7. took out GPU only touchng the metal rack at the back of it
8.placed GPU on anti-static wrap and lightly brushed over heatsink with cotton wool bud
9.placed GPU back in slot again only touching the metal bit
10. closed up case, conected cords at back and turned on pc
11. Computer freezes during start up

When you reapplied he HSF did you reapply some thermal goo?
You did reattach all your leads? double check everything....Also did you try going into your BIOS? if so let me know how that goes.


You are funny, i just took my video card out about 2 months ago to test in my buddies machine (he has a 2.2Ghz Cellery 256MB ram) to see how a good card reacts in a terrible machine......i took it out...put it in my pcoket, no bag jjust pocket, got into my car threw it on the seat next to me....drove to this guys house tested it in 3machines. then headed off to work....left it in my car all night, it got super cold and then i came home threw it in my machine and its never had a problem.

Granted i have a BFG card so if something goofed i was covered....but you treat your hardware like its made of fine lead crystal

hey i tried putting on the HSF again and it seems to have worked, i was able to enter safe mode and restore my computer and its working fine now. Thanx for your help. I was just nervous about it cuz i am selling this computer in 3 days and the money i get from it will alow me to get my new computer and if it was stuffed then i wouldnt be able to get my new pc and i would be stuffed (final yr of school) . But yeh lol im probably being a bit pedantic, im just really tired at the moment. But thanks for your help man, i really appreciated it, better than any of the help i got on other forums.

Actually Wingy has Ceramique cum.....not generic thermal goo....lol
