i have a dell dimension 9100 and i need help finding a cpu for the stock 0x8582 motherboard, this machine will be used for gaming

The fastest PentiumD will just equal thew slowest Core2Duo. if you had a Dimension 9200 you could do something with it. See below.

They did move the USB ports in the back, and changed the sound outlets from 5 to 6. So a little metal work will be needed. A nibbler would do it.
That's a nice case, maybe a MB swap. Then QX6800 like the E520 in my sig. ( the MB is the same except for the Mid tower size).
The link below shows that this mobo does not support anything above a 2-core/2-thread Pentium CPU.

Most of today's games will not run with these 2-thread Pentiums. There are two Hyper-threaded Presler Pentiums, the "Extreme Edition 955 and 965".

Not sure if you can use these in the Dell 9100 but I suspect not.
