I'm sorry I don't know much about these bios stuff, but I managed to update my bios somehow (by the way this was some time ago) using a flash drive. But the system needed the flash drive plugged in when turning on or else it would get stuck at the screen where it shows the brand name and model of the motherboard. Now I don't want to be relying on this flimsy flash drive to unlock the whole computer and I decided that I was better off when I didn't update the bios.
Here is the info:
asus p5n-e sli
current bios verison 0602
My computer does not have a floppy disk drive

So I think I have two choices:

- somehow reset the bios to before I updated the bios.

- update again to a newer version, but I'll need better instructions because I am very inexperienced and I don't understand what they are saying on the asus website how to update bios thing.

Can somebody tell me which choice is more sensible and can you guide me on how to do it?

Thank you VERY much

This is all in your motherboard manual under 'Update BIOS with ASUS UPdate Tool'. You can read it there.

Download the correct BIOS version from the ASUS website to your desktop. Open ASUS update tool. From the ASUS Update tool dropdown menu select 'update BIOS from a file'. Choose the correct BIOS file you downloaded to your desktop. The tool will verify you have the corect BIOS rev. Flash the BIOS.

haha thanks again for helping me solve my problems, but I am haunted by the thought of my computer being stuck at the brand name & model screen. (and this happened once before I discovered that I had to have the flash drive plugged in to work, and I was overtaken by panic)

Now you're sure that this will work right? no more dependency of flimsy flash drives to turn on the system? I just want to make sure

Go to the ASUS website for your MB. Find the Downlaods page for your specific MB. Open the BIOS available. Choose the latest non-BETA version and download or 'save' it to your desktop. Follow the instructions in your MB manual under 'Update BIOS with ASUS Update Tool'. I have no idea what you are asking about DOS and such.

Yes I am on the downloads page and I see the list of downloads. each bios download shows the
-version
-os
-description
-file size
-download from

and next to os it either DOS or DOS/All OS

and what is DOS?

sorry I am so paranoid about gettings things right..
I have windows xp and this will work?
I save the 0703 to the desktop (it is a zip)
I extract the 0703.bin to desktop
and then I select the 0703.bin (in desktop) in asus update
and then flash?

Thank you VERY much for helping me again

Not trying to be a smarta$$ there mousemonkey, but DOS stands for DISC operating system. Which Microsoft basically stole in 1981 for like 25 or 50 grand(US).

considering what utaka95 just said, and in addition to this question above, should I get the 0608 (which is DOS/All OS) instead of 0703 (which is just DOS)

thanks

I have never had a single problem flashing my BIOS on my ASUS Motherboards. I really am not sure what you are doing. I suggest you read your MB manual and follow the instructions there. I really don't know what to tell you? For me, it could not have more simple.

Hey Badge, I think the problem is all the people who have warned him how he can screw up his board doing this. Now the fud is making it hard to think logically. All I can say is, if you are using the windows utility, download the file, run the program, reboot.

I will say I have ruined a board (MSI) flashing the BIOS over the internet. I have 5 or 6 ASUS boards I use almost everyday and I constantly update the BIOS with the ASUS Update Tool (from a file downloaded to the desktop as the manual instructs). I have never had a problem. I know, OP is very hesitant. I undrstand perfectly, I just don't know how to answer his questions. Funny, I have guided others through the same process. Normally it is easy.

Yes I have read the manual (long before & again now) but it still does not answer my questions..
so I will tell you what I am going to do here just to be safe and you just have to say "yes it will work" ok?

on my windows xp computer with asus p5n-e sli with current bios version 0602
I will get the 0608 from here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5N-E%20SLI
I will save the 0608.zip to desktop
I will extract the 0608.bin from it to desktop
and In asus update I will select 0608.bin from desktop
and then run it
and reboot

this will work?

Shhhhhesh...I just download the file to my desktp, open the ASUS update tool, from the dropdown select 'update BIOS form a file'. click on the 'file'. The ASUS Update tool will do all the rest. I never 'extract' anything. The tool will verify the BIOS you currently have as well as the BIOS file you are prepared to loading up.

I think you do have to extract the 0608.bin out of the 0608.zip because when I download the 0608.zip to desktop the asus update does not show that 0608.zip on the desktop so I will extract ok?

now someone answer this please:

does not show that 0608.zip on the desktop so I will extract ok?

Nope. You are dead wrong. The file ou downloaded is there on the desktop. You have to manupilate the ASUS Update tool to find ALL files and look closely for it. It's there. That's the file you want. You do not have to extract anything at all.
