Solution
well your hard drive picked out is extremely slow, go for an ssd if your budget allows or a 7.2k rpm drive. Your also going to need to get a better PSU, while the wattage should be enough, but if its a crappy PSU it most definitely will kill your whole system or burn down your house when worse comes to worst. Other than that go to the motherboard manufacturers website and find your board and make sure that it's the same LGA socket as the CPU and that your board supports 6th gen core I3's and your good to go.

NEVER EVER COMPROMISE ON THE PSU. Get a better PSU for sure. Atleast 450W from Corsair, EVGA or Seasonic, like this:

What is your location? Budget? Let us see if there are alternatives.

You definitely need a faster HDD and that CPU is 2 generations back

Well, the CPU is still a good budget CPU for his presumed budget. There isn't that much of an improvement between 6th and 7th gen CPU's he should be fine with it, I don't see a need to upgrade it unless he wants to get a better GPU.

The i3 6100 is 2 physical cores hyperthreaded to four, which is nothing compared to the i3 8100 which has 4 physical cores. And not to mention the i3 8100 is only $9 more.

Seriously recommend he go for the 8100 to future proof a bit and save costs over the long run. Does not matter what GPU he has. He will need a new mobo and RAM for the 8100.

And thats where the jump from DDR3 to DDR4 and a new mobo will get him in the price. Factor in a new mobo and DDR4 and then getr him a new price it will be a lot more than just $9.

Like I said earlier, your going to want a faster HDD, as well as a good brand PSU, never trust a cheap or even cheap looking PSU. Also, he wasn't wrong about the 8th gen I3, however your going to have to get DDR4 and a new motherboard to support it. I would try going to your motherboard support page and finding an i5 or i7 that will work and get which ever fits your budget however you should be fine with the i3 you picked out as long as you aren't playing at super low resolution like 720p, where it stresses the CPU more. Also don't expect all games to run well... As it still is a dual core, the hyperthreading will help some.
