This has been frustrating me for a couple months. I've originally been looking at buying a My Book Live or Goflex gigabit network drives but I'm not sure it's what I'm looking for.
I don't want an interface or setup or anything. I just want it to appear on my network as a drive like when I plug it in (either USB shareport or gigabit ethernet). I think this is normally not possible, but I have a DIR-825 D-Link router with a shareport USB spot. I can plug in a USB drive and access it through the shareport utility. This works great but I need something larger than 32GB - something in the TB's. Unfortunately I can only have 1 computer access it at a time, but that's all I really need for now.
I have 2 1TB drives that I don't use. I'm wondering if I can buy a regular (non-NAS) USB external enclosure and be able to slide the 2 drives in and then hook it up to the router via USB through the shareport. Would it be recognized as a storage drive on its own? Would it see both separate drives? I have no idea. It would be NICE if I could set the unit up manually in RAID1 mirorring, and basically show up as 1 1TB storage device from the shareport utility.
Anyone have any experience with this? Any insight would help me out a WHOLE BUNCH!
Thanks!
