I currently have 8GB's of RAM and I would like to upgrade for future life proof and for editing. Does having 12 mess with anything since the one 4GB stick wont be dual channeled. Is it fine for me to have 12GB's? Also, what does it matter if I'm dual channeled?

Solution
No, you are better off buying 4x4GB of ram or 2x8GB of ram for dual channel support. 16 GB of ram total is ideal for video editing and rendering.

Dual channel is much faster than single channel

If you put a 8gb and 4gb stick in, it will automatically go down to single channel. The ram sticks have to be identical in size and mostly the same types of ram
