I need some help ocing...

I'm having a serious issue with overclocking my processor. Its really odd because it doesnt seem to have issues under stress at all.

I try to OC the cpu, just to 2900 mhz, and its totally fine in prime 95, stable for a good while, but then just using windows, it randomly freezes. Could it be my ram? I'm mixing some really lame 1 gig of dual channel ddr2 533 with 2 gigs of ddr 2 dual channel 800mhz ram. Im only using stock cooling but temps dont seem bad at all.

Running 2 different memory types sounds more like the issue. Different timings and voltage ratings are probably causing some sort of conflict. 2 gigs of 800 may be overclocked to run at 533 speeds if you loosen the timings a bit , plus you will be running in dual channel mode.

ah good. I plan on buying some new ram anyway. and bpogdowz, my "gay phenom" outperforms a q6600 so that just doesnt make logical sense.

^My point was you have a low quality PSU. It's a time bomb. Just to give you an idea of Apavia's quality:

It should be noted that I stopped testing on the first Apevia unit we had after Test #3 because the unit began to melt. I could not completely identify where the unit was melting from nor photograph it very well because the unit had to remain in tact in order to get an RMA as these units were purchased at retail. However, the second unit we received also began to melt during Test #3 but not nearly as badly and from what appeared to be a different location.

And the strange thing was, every time the unit did this, I was able to shut down and restart the unit in test four and it would work perfectly until I hit test five again. I tried four times to get the unit to complete test five, and it failed every single time. At no time did the protection circuitry step in and shut the unit down, which is inexcusable for me. Especially since exhaust temps went past 72 degrees the moment test five started. The unit brags about having overtemp protection, but I'll be darned if I ever saw it work. At any rate, overtemp protection is the least of my worries now, what with test CL1 giving me new records of suck on the 3.3V and 5V readings. Forget about overtemp, where's the overcurrent protection in all this?

Now I'm even more depressed. The rails actually look pretty clean until tests five and CL1 where the 3.3V promptly goes out of spec, hitting an abominable 80mV at one point. The ATX spec is 50mV. I'm sorry, Apevia, but my princess is in another castle.

i say 35 % its your ram, 35% powersupply the rest of the 30% is your config/ voltages.

as said i've replaced the psu, that didnt fix it, and i dont think its voltages but i could be wrong.

to shadow - thats very odd. My psu is fantastic so far. it keeps very very cool actually, has quad rails adding up to more than 50 amps, i really dont see an issue with it as of yet.

well 2 things first to habitat - that didnt fix it, so im going to run memtest86, also, i noticed that when i just use my good ram, the 2 gigs of 800mhz, i cant boot with its "regular timings". My mobo sets it to 5-5-5-16, when the timings are supposed to be 4-4-4-12. i manually changed them, and then the computer just restarts as soon as it says "starting windows"

to shadow - its odd, every site ive seen says that the psu is amazing, and all user reviews are positive that i've found. my friend has had an apevia warlock for 2 years and it has had no issues.

The computer works fine when the cpu isnt overclocked, the ram can be configured in any which way when the cpu is at stock speed. However whenever i overclock the cpu beyond 2.75 ghz (thats only a 150 mhz oc) i get random freezing in windows. Even if i overvolt, its not stable. I cant get the ram to proper timings either, 4 4 4 12 wont boot even with no oc on the cpu. So i have a feeling that my 2 gigs of 800 mhz ram are messed up.

Once again, AMD are not over clocking CPU. They are probably already factory over clocked in fact it's just that AMD is so far behind in the CPU game.

i've overclocked to 3.4 before on this cpu, so its not like its unable to be oced, no thats certainly not it. If i have a bad oc it will freeze and then bsod, not just freeze with constant audio loops.
