Hey everybody. I want to upgrade my CPU to be able to handle games like Far Cry 4 and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. My pc is an hp pavilion p6-2310. My current processor is an AMD A4 3420. And my motherboard is an AAHD2-HY(Holly2). I don't know if you'll need these but my PSU is 300 watts and my GPU is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 750 TI. I think that's all the information you'll need.

Basically I'm asking if I can switch from an AMD processor to an intel, and I want to know a good processor that will play new gen games. Keep in mind I'm looking for something fairly cheap, I'm not looking for the ultimate CPU that will destroy Assassin's Creed Unity or anything, just something that will play next gen. Thanks for your time!

Solution

It makes a good chassis for one, the problem with pre-builts is that they usually are built down to a price and that price lacks quality, the PSU is not very powerful and it lacks a dedicated GPU.

Like I said, I would heavily advise building your own custom PC so you know exactly what is being put in it, and if you are daunted by the task, don't be, there are tons of guides, videos and forums and even people like me to help you with it, I built my first computer when I was 12. Building isn't only mildly more difficult than buying one, its Phillips screws and plugging in cables, thats basically it. And like...
Well, you will need at least a new processor, motherboard, and PSU, My recommendations are any i3 processor (possibly a pentium G3258 if you want to overlock) a good quality 400W PSU (corsair Evga, seasonic), and a name brand motherboard (LGA 1150) with good ratings, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132052) this one will do. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Update: The case you are using is OK, i would heavily advise getting a new one and just making a personal PC build, it isn't terribly difficult and there are tons of forums like this with help you build it.

Oh I didn't see that while looking at the specs. Thanks for that link! Which of those processors plays next gen? I know I probably need a quad core. But which would you recommend, I know a decent bit about RAM and GPU but hardly anything about CPUs, that's mainly where I'm weak.

You really can't use anything out of your old build. An H.P. is filled with proprietary i/o connectors. You would need a new case because of that. Your board would probably not handle a four core cpu because the phase power and chokes are really weak not even being heatsinked. Your power supply is anemic.

Alright, so lets start where you are a little weak, For the processor go for about an i3 (All processors play so called "next gen" its all a matter of price ) it should provide all the power for some mid range gaming, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116995) and the motherboard link previously provided, you can easily re-use the ram and gpu from your old computer, thats no problem. Now, that 300W PSU has to go, it doesn't have enough power to drive all the components now, this is the one I am using in my current build, and for you it should be fine (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045&cm_re=Antec_450-_-17-371-045-_-Product) and you can easily re-use your current case, but a new one would be recommended, look at the site where all the other components were and find a case in your price bracket.

I'm basically making a PC build for you (i don't mind i love doing this stuff)
any questions feel free to ask :)

I need an upgrade in my GPU, CPU, mobo, PSU, a case, and RAM. Do you guys think I should just get a new computer? I bought this computer before I had even planned on gaming on it. Maybe I should just get a new one.

Well, technically this is a new computer, you are just the one buying the components and building it yourself.

Eh idk. I'm 14 years old (and I know you said you were 12 when you built your first one).

To be honest I'm very dumb and clumsy and I usually break everything I touch. I guess I could build one but I'm really scared to.

I wanted to ask you something else actually. I have an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 750 TI currently installed in this computer, just upgraded a few weeks ago. Can I take it out and put it in that one? Thanks a ton for the help you've given me so far.

Yes, the 750 can easily be re-used , and I am just as old as you are, and probably more clumsy, so do not worry. if you would like to talk more privately feel free to PM me.

Update: I understand that you are a little scared to do this, and fortunately my first PC re-build was my father's old one, and unfortunately you do not have a "dummy unit" to practice on. But I 100% assure you, you can build a PC, all It takes is a little time, patients, and dedication to get it done.

Hey, I apologize for resurrecting this old thread, but it's for a very good reason! I have EXACTLY the same rig that you're asking about...& the same question! HP p6-2310 desktop, AMD A4 3420, Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti. I have 8 GB RAM, don't remember seeing where your RAM quota stood.

What did you end up doing?

Interestingly enough, this rig already does a super job w/ Battlefield 2 & 3, even all the Crysis games. I've always been an Intel guy, though, & figured that an i7, for example, would certainly provide a better experience than what I have. Anyway, very interested to see where you landed on this!

Hey, Computer newb, just wanted to give a status update on where I went w/ my p6-2310. I upgraded the hard drive to Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD (new black one) & replaced the A4-3420 w/ an A8-3870, the max it will accept in that FM1 slot. Actually really happy w/ the performance of both. Notably, Battlefield 3 & Need For Speed Most Wanted perform better. I'm happy. Snagged my upgrade items from eBay. I noted you'll find a few different flavors of A8-3870 out there. Mine isn't the one that says XBOX in the model number, it's AD3870WNZ43GX. Enjoy!
