Are you running 1920x1200 or 2560x1400? If its 1200, get the 680, if its 1400, get the 690 if you want to max out 98% of games. You also need a Z77 board and I'd get an 850w PSU for a 690 minimum.

More imporantly, get a decent monitor such as Dell's U2412M for 1200 or a U27 IPS model for 1400. Bottom line, what resolution and what games?

The 690 is built for 2560 x 1400, you'd get an easy 60FPS at that resolution. To get 60FPS+ at 1920x1200 you'd get a 680. The choice is yours. You really don't need anything above 60FPS, I'd take a quality IPS Ultrasharp over 120Hz TN panel anyday.
