Hello, can you tell me why this morning I had no updates, but on shutting down to restore my internet connection I had in the first place 54 updates beeing installed. when the machine allowed me back in a further 3 updates were to be installed?

Check you update settings. Auto download will bring down files but not install until scheduled time (e.g. 3:00 AM) so a shut down will force the install. Further updated will come after the first bunch complete.
