I ordered aa Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR3 1866 8GB stick to go along with my other 8gb stick of the same kind. I went into my bios before and changed my 1 8gb stick speed to 1333(default speed that mobo sets it to) because I thought the other stick would run at a different speed and I didn't want any problems. Once I installed it I put the both to 1866 and everything ran fine. Is there any other settings I should enable in my bios? I have a Asus Maximus VII and I'm wondering do I need XMP enabled and does it help my ram in some way? I'm not sure and I'm looking for some guidance.

Solution
You were fortunate.
Ram from different kits is not guaranteed to work together.

Run memtest86+. You should get NO errors for a full pass or two.
XMP is a profile set into the ram that lets the ram run at the xmp speed and cas numbers.
Usually, using xmp is the easy way to go.
I would not bother changing anything at this time.
Don't fix something that is not broken.
