I have no idea what to do. I am looking at buying two XFX Radeon HD 7970 and running them in a sli configuration or maybe buying two asus 290x platinum and running them in sli as well or maybe 1 280x plat and one 280x.

I have no idea which would be the best solution in terms of money and performance.

I would really appreciate all and any help. Thank you.

Any time you can use a single card instead of fighting the possible issues with SLI or crossfire you should do it. A single R9 295X costs less than 2 of the 290x's and gives close to twice the performance. If money is no object then the gtx980ti or 990ti is far superior to most any other card.

Terribly sorry it was meant to say 280x not 290.

Depending upon your intended use like CAD, video editing, gaming, or just wanting dual monitors, a single higher powered card is preferable to a SLI or crossfire situation regardless of speed of card. You not only get better performance with a higher card but you also future proof your card somewhat. To avoid possible compatibility issues, get the 2 highest rated identical cards you can afford if you decide to crossfire.

Make sure that you have room for 2 cards and that your PSU is capable of running 2 cards first. Compare video cards against each other at the link to see which fits your requirements and your budget. http://gpuboss.com/compare-gpus

295x is, for all intents and purposes, 2x 290x Xfired.

Because of that, twice the performance is the best case scenario, generally it's around 50~60% on average, although it can get as bad as 0% or even negative's for certain games.
