I recently purchased a XBR55X900E Sony. The refresh rate is listed as 120hz, clear motion 960. Sony confirms this. They made a

I am assuming that the specifications are correct that the refresh rate is 120Hz. I am assuming that by content driven, it will play 60 Hz content at 60 Hz.

On my personal TV, I have the primary monitor set as a 144 Hz gaming monitor with the display duplicated on the TV. I don't think that the TV S running at 144 Hz. But to answer your question, it hasn't blown up yet.

That's a good question. For some reason, this is the only part of my question that came up. My original post went into the question about Sony upgrading the firmware from 6.? to 7.0 and in the process, removing my ability to adjust framerate from the Developers options menu. I got this for playing games, and really wanted to try some games at 120hz. Sony says the framerate is now content driven, it depends on the input device. I asked about custom frame rates from an AlienWare laptop with 120hz native, powered by a GTX1070. They kind of said that would work, but also void the warranty. I want some opinions from people experienced in this type of work, hopefully telling me I stand a good chance of getting my framerate without blowing the TV. up.

Solution

The following are a few responses from Sony on this. "Thank you for contacting Sony Video and Sound Support., Based on the information you provided, I understand that you'd like to setup the Alien ware laptop to the TV and access gaming at 120fps., Please follow the below steps on the TV., Connect the High speed HDMI cable between the TV and the laptop., Follow the below steps to activate the enhanced feature on the TV., Press Home button on the supplied TV Remote >> Scroll down to Settings>> TV settings>> External inputs >> Scroll down to HDMI signal format >> Select the HDMI port on with the device is connected to and Change from standard to enhanced. 1. Turn off the device.
2. Unplug the device power cord from the electrical outlet.
3. Let the device remain without power for 60 seconds.
4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
5. Turn ON the device." This of course doesn't do anything for the framerate. I asked about reverting to the 6.?.? firmware, their response, " We have checked our resources and we would like to inform you that, you could not revert back to the previous firmware update." I then asked for a straight answer and got this, "I've checked my resources and I would like to inform that we do not have option to enable 120hz refresh rate because that's depend on the content and device which are connected to the TV. I would suggest you to connect TV to any 4K device using high speed HDMI cable and enable 4k HDR signal format on the TV. In order to do that please follow the below mentioned steps. HDMI signal format, To change the HDMI signal format setting, press the HOME button, then select [Settings] — [External inputs] — [HDMI signal format] — Enhanced format." (Already done) " After that let's enable HDR on the TV [Settings] — [Picture & Display] — [Picture adjustments] — [Advanced settings] — [Video options]. " I then asked about setting a custom framerate in NVidia control panel, and got this final answer. "Please be informed that will void the warranty of the TV. The warranty for the device is one year from the date of purchase." I'm still hoping that someone educated in this type of stuff, can give me an idea about the odds of my TV. crapping out if I try this anyway. The TV. wasn't cheap, but I did get it for its supposed capabilities.
