i reinstalled vista now it says can not find ethernet adapter

I reinstalled vista on my mother n laws dell xps when goin to reinstall the internet software it says it can not find the Ethernet adapter. I need help nothing quite like telling ur mother n law u will help her with her computer n end up making it to where she can't get on the internet at all :/
