Just FYI, here's how I solved a big problem.
I have a Compaq V2658US that I upgraded to Windows 7, but after doing so, the original Matshita UJ-840 CD/DVD doesn't work at all. The generic Win7 driver is incompatible and I couldn't locate a replacement driver.
No matter... I replaced the burner with a compatible one for around $30 or so. I bought the NEC ND-6650A. It so happens I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that I also upgraded to Win7, and that's the burner it has so I was able to test it out before I bought another NEC).
On my laptop, I just moved the bezel and the small bracket at the back from the old drive to the new one.
The Win7 drivers work fine in my experience so far.
Saved my laptop(s) from the landfill, because XP is dead. (I have 2G RAM, and disabled Win7 Aero by using a basic theme). (I bought a 3-pack upgrade to Win7 from Costco several years back and finally got around to using the 2nd and 3rd licenses).
