2 years ago I bought a 3TB WD RED NAS drive, for backup purpose of my old win 7 pc. I took backup of all my 8 other disks to this one, and keept it at safe place. Now 2 years later I need the backup, but disk is as mentioned only showing 746 GB in "Sentinel" on my new win 8 system

If windows explorer & disk management show drive as 746 gb recuva is unlikely to help

If important go to a data recovery company
If you cant afford the cost consider cgsecurity org test disk
Prefferably on a linux distribution instead of windows

Examples gparted. Or parted magic linux iso images
Consider also trying in a different modern pc
As i was just readig a report that older non uefi bios motherboards cant see full disk size and falsely report size as 746 gb
Writing to disk may corrupt data

I would agree that's worth a try.

I also think it's worth looking into the BIOS/UEFI issue that mbarnes alluded to. The older master boot record (MBR) system can only define drives up to 2.2 TB; drives larger use GPT. The catch is that the traditional PC BIOS only supports MBR; for GPT drives you need a system with UEFI (basically the successor to traditional BIOS).

So if your "new" system has a traditional BIOS and the drive is set up with GPT, it may not know what to do with it.

Here is where my knowledge admittedly stops - I know the above is a problem if you are using it as a bootable drive, but I am not sure in your configuration whether it counts as a bootable, external or network drive and how that may affect it. Not as common of a problem to run into. Most new PCs these days would ship with UEFI.

Bottom line, try it in another machine that you know uses UEFI and see if it is recognized correctly there.
 
Last night I went to see a friend who uses Linux. He managed to view the files with a Linux program called Testview.
Fantastic program.
Now I just have to buy a new ext drive to connect to his computer to copy the files, before I can reformate my 3TB disk to set it up correctly 😛

Undescribable feeling being able to see some sample pictures from the collection :)
