Manufacturer: iBUYPOWER Computers
OS: Windows 10
Processor: Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
RAM: 16.0 GB
System type: 64-bit
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 660
Motherboard: ASROCK PCI Express 2.0 H61M-HVS

So I've had this computer since 2013 and I've always had problems playing games on it. I knew something was wrong but never tried to fix it because I just didn't have time or money for it. Anyway, when I load up a game like Borderlands 2 or Heroes of the Storm it'll crash my computer within 5-10 minutes. The framerate is always poor. For instance, on heroes it tells me to play on ultra settings but when I do that my framerate dips to a solid 7 fps. To just play the game I've been on medium settings with MSI Afterburner on. When I put my Fan Speed to max it seems to make my gaming experience last without crashing. I'm not sure if it's my fan overheating or something wrong with my motherboard. Do I need a new Motherboard? Or a new fan? or both?

Solution

Before you blame your motherboard, this doesn't even sound motherboard related. Now let me ask you a few questions:

• Is your motherboard speaker plugged in?

• Do you get a blue screen of death?

• If you get the blue screen, what does it say the error is?

Crashing usually has to do with heat or lack of voltage. I'm guessing your issue was heat related. Here's what to do:

1. Take off right side panel
2. Turn on PC
3. See if any fans on CPU or GPU aren't working

Obviously a broken fan is a big deal, it can cause overheating if it's on a crucial part like the CPU or GPU. Now anyway if you find a broken fan, your problem is pretty much solved, you can just RMA whatever is defective (if it has a 3 year or more warranty 😛). Another solution to see if heat is the problem is to do this:

1. Download RealTemp
2. Load one of these games
3. Check RealTemp in gameplay to see what temps your CPU is hitting. It'll also tell you maximum temperature, which is also essential
4. If you're hitting above 80°C, you'll want to consider a new cooler, I'd go for a Hyper 212 Evo if I were you, then see if your problem is solved. If not, it's probably your graphics card overheating, or bad airflow in your case. I don't know of any GPU temp monitors (you can find one with a simple google search probably), but I believe GPU max temp should be around 90°C, I don't pay much attention to GPU overclocking and heating issues though so don't quote me on that. Airflow is a whole different story though, so if you want to buy a good fan(s) for your case, I'd either watch Linus's video on Sleeve vs Ball bearing (and pick which one according to noise level and life span), or if you don't give a shit about noise and life span just buy the cheapest one you see on newegg that's the correct size :)

• Is your motherboard speaker plugged in?
I believe so.
• Do you get a blue screen of death?
No the sounds just glitches out and my screen goes black. Everything is unresponsive.
• If you get the blue screen, what does it say the error is?

My fans work. I just cleaned my fans and now it doesn't seem overheat without the MSI Afterburner. My GPU and CPU aren't overheating either. They're around 70°C in game. My games still run poorly.

I would say it's the graphics card because it's pretty weak, but the thing is I don't believe these games are very intensive, as they aren't priced very high. Anyway, you gave me the answers that could make this situation pretty tough, although I can conclude his is either a CPU issue, or a GPU issue. So here's what I would do: I would use an app if I were you that requires a lot of CPU power, for example Sony Vegas Pro 13 trial (or full version if you have it). Now try rendering something, and see if it takes a while. If it does, the issue is your processor isn't working correctly. In that case, that can be pretty bad because the 3770k is a hard processor to buy, plus the fact that you'd have to RMA it. Before you RMA the processor though you should probably check to see if you can fix it some other way.

Now let's say the processor renders fine. The issue is probably your graphics card. If it turns out like this, you should try running other games on it. I suggest you try Unturned, and use this benchmark to compare with:

If it runs Unturned fine, then I have no hell of an idea what your issue is.
