I have a custom built system that I put together back in april, recently my computer has been acting really weird. At the desktop when i move the mouse in circles, every other second it stops then continues moving, like a HUGE stutter. Im thinking this has somthing to do with my memory timings. Im also thinking I havent had this problem yet with the way Ive been running it so I dont know what the hell it could be. I put the settings back to default and CPU-Z is rating my cpu at either 1206.00mhz or 1809.00mhz, changing every few seconds. Ill tell you my setup and hopefully someone could give me some insight on what my settings SHOULD be set to.... please help..

E4300 @ stock voltage running at 2.7 (300x9)
965p-DS3 Rev 3.3 F10 Bios
2x1Gb Patriot pc 6400 with the voltage set to auto,4-4-4-12 timings, 1:1 ratio

I would normally say that was just Speedstep, but sounds like your CPU is throttling for some reason. You have the stock cooler on it? Is it seated properly? Good thermal interface material application?

Just curious if that could be caused by overheating. I know it sounds silly, being at stock voltage, and not really OC'd much, but something is causing your CPU to back off. Heat is the usual suspect, and a not-so-properly seated stock cooler can assure it.

RAM timings won't affect CPU speed, but give it a shot 😛

Just to clarify, if you do have the stock cooler, then one of the push pins could have popped out recently. That would explain the problem only happening lately. I have yet to install an Intel cooler, so I can't explain myself about what the pins look like when done properly. Someone here will be able to help. I just know this is a pretty common problem with the mounting method of the stock HSF.

Sorry, forgot to post my cpu fan. Im using the Thermaltake Big Typhoon. Ever since I put it all together I had a "feeling" I used to much thermal arctic silver. This was my first build and I had a experienced buddy install the HUGE fan. I applied the paste though, im not sure if I used to much. My temps are high I believe, I just ran orthos running the cpu at 2.4, after 20 seconds my temp went from 36c idle to 56..57... after a minute and a half I stopped it but Ive seen it get to 60c in a matter of 10-15 minutes in a previous test. Im using Core temp version 0.96.1.0

Check the paste, if you use too much you can actually fry your ship slowly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All you need of thermal paste is a dot, take that heatsink off, clean that stuff off, and redo it with 1 dot of paste. Should be no larger than a grain of rice, spread it out with your finger, and put the heatsink/fan back on.

Like my pc now, I'm running an amd Athlon 5200 x2, stock speed, but using stock paste and heatsink, i am idling at 25 degrees celcius according to speedfan. Thermal paste is only supposed to fill in the gaps in the metal on the heatsink and the chip in order to get a better mating surface so the heatsink/fan can cool the chip sufficiently. If you used to much, you may be slowly cooking your chip, thus the throttling effect. Now on a lot of systems, the speed will still change as you are seeing to save power, but you shouldn't notice so much slowdown, and your temps seem way way too high.

Can anyone read the last 2 posts and give me advice on how to take out the motherboard so I can re apply the thermal paste? I have a Thermaltake Tsunami case, Thermaltake Big Typhoon, and a 8800 GTS which barely fits....damnit...

I'm not 100% sure it is heat just yet. You need to make sure you don't have any malware/viruses causing problems as well. However, if the CPU is truely running at 1.2 or 1.8 and you are still getting those temps, it may be that your HSF isn't mounted properly. We still haven't nailed down the cause of the problem just yet. I was just speculating with the facts given :)

Well.. you remove the side panel. Then remove the the 8800 GTS.

After that disconnect all cables going to the motherboard.

Then remove all screws holding the motherboard in and remove it.

Once outside the case remount the cooler.

To put the motherboard back in, reverse above steps...

Seriously tho, listen to Thanatos.

Put EVERYTHING back to default and see if that clears it up. Then change things one at a time back to your normal OC and see what setting causes it. 58C isn't hot. Virus/Malware perhaps.. What version of CPU-Z?

Do you notice it in games or anywhere else where it becomes slow all of a sudden? Or is the only reason you notice it from running CPU-Z?

Ouch no, no's! Don't spread with your finger since you have oil's/deadskin that your mixing into the paste, also maybe a little bit bigger than a dot, not much, just a little, and have the HS do the spreading itself when you clamp it down. That will ensure a nice even coating. I believe the arctic silver website has a very very nice guide on applying pastes.

Here's that guide I was talking about: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/cmq/ins_cmq_intel_dual_wcap.pdf

Thermal compound is quite dangerous to humans, no licking of fingers after the spreadimg i hope, Tis the size of the molecules in the compound (esp silver Based) that mean they are taken into the bloodstream easily through the cell membrane barriers.

Use a credit card to apply the paste evenly over the cpu, small layer is all thats needed. if in doubt, test a small pea size amount on a piece of glass, place heatsink on pea-size blob and watch it spread from underneath, once uve seen that you will get it right every time
