[SOLVED] I think my 1060 died... upgrade options?

Hi all, not nice from my side to start my first post like this ...
My evga geforce 1060 6g died tonight in a weird way, cooler went hyper crazy, then black screen, while navigating, barely open pc...
After a restart I got an image for few seconds then no more. No fan spinning nothing.
So I'm looking for an upgrade if possible.

Running on H170 PRO GAMING motherboard, 16gb Ram, 750w psu and i5 7600k 3.8h
I know a full pc upgrade sound mode good, but a SH graphic card will end up saving some... not the right time for spending unfortunately.

Will a 2060 be ok or should I lower the stake to a 1080 or any other suggestions?

1080 is much better than 2060. From a 1060 I would advise you to get at least 5700 xt, 2070 or used 1080ti. If you are on tight budget and want to sidegrade go for 590.

The best solution nowadays however is to buy a prebuilt with rtx 3000 or RX 6000 card and then keep the GPU and sell the system. It might be tough for few days if you're on budget but the resell value of products are much high in current Market

@rakibfahadgts - I will eventually get a new pc, but that will be next year, un till there I’m just looking for the cheaper version of upgrade, worst case scenario I’ll go for another evga 1060 6gb, but worth considering if I can upgrade for some extra cash.

I'm really sorry you lost your card. Unfortunately your options are crappy and crappier thanks to miners and crypto currency.

Word is there is a large batch of 3060ti incoming. That means you should be able to grab one for $800 if you check every day IF you are lucky.

Do not buy used. With prices so high on everything there's little to no incentive for people to sell because a replacement with something new would be outrageously priced. That would lead me to suspect the seller to offloading a dieing card. Value is not there. And older cards do have caps and vrms MOSFETs that die with time (similar to how yours likely failed)

New is always better, but I guess it also depends where you can get a used one. For example my small brother always buys my last GPU when I change cards.


Also about that 5 years old unit, Im not a PSU expert but I would not discard a new PSU too. Perhaps some included in the top tiers https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/psucultists-psu-tier-list-rev-14-8-12-07-2021.3624094/

Yea the 3060ti is a very nice upgrade, over the 1060 6gb, even though prices are still terrible. Not much you can do, when you have to have something, now, though.

Better having it now, even if it does bottleneck on my cpu i5 7600k 3.8ghz and upgrade the cpu further on.

You don't need an i9. This would be plenty, for just gaming. You could step up to a 5800x, if you wanted/needed, better multitasking capability.

Right now, the most awesome upgrade for the money are the Core i5 10400 and 11400 (6 cores/12 threads) + 2x8 GB DDR4 3200/3600 CL16 and for motherboard any decent B460/B560 or Z490/Z590.

If you wana cross to the other platform with AMD, best thing out there (price performance wise) is the Ryzen 5 5600X + 2x8 GB DDR4 3200/3600 CL14/CL16 + any decent B550 mobo (which should include 1 nvme PCIE4 and 1 usb C front panel plug).

I see, of course is your choice.

Just so you know AMD is been doing x86 CPUs for the last 30 years, they also had the performance crown on the Athlon days. Right now the zen architecture is as stable as it can be, in pair of anything intel have to offer (well not exactly in pair cause depending on the task Ryzen/Threadripper can do the same faster and consuming less power).
Cisco, Dell EMC, HPE and Lenovo are selling EPYC (zen) servers so Im guessing they can't be that unstable. And Threadripper have become the way to go for rough brutal power workstations.

I been runing my R5 3600 everyday without issues since launch day (July 2019). There were a few hiccups for the first 2 weeks, but all was fixed with a few BIOS updates (my guess AMD rushed the product a little bit that time).
In fact I been using this R5 PC everyday, 14 hours a day, since I started doing home office in early march 2020, and Im still using it. Mixing work with a few hours of gaming.

Back to topic, intel is the choice right now because of money, they are cheaper. You can't go wrong with any of them. Thats my humble point of view.

I have a 3700x and a 5800x with 0 issues, that were not of my own doing. The stability problems were 1st gen ryzen, and 300 series boards. That said, the 10600k is a really good value right now, if you absolutely want Intel.

A 1080 is a hair behind in performance versus a non-Super 2070, only without raytracing/DLSS. Technically, it can do raytracing, but the performance hit isn't worth it. It will never do DLSS. I'm using a 1080 FE, and it's still a decent card in 2021, and the prices should start to come down sooner than RTX cards.
