Question I Think My 3080 Died

System Specs:
CPU: i7-12700k
Mobo: Asus Tuf Gaming Z690-Plus Wifi D4
GPU: PNY XLR8 Gaming Revel 3080 with an EK waterblock on a Fractal Design B-20 Vertical GPU Mount

Recently my PC started crashing a lot while gaming. At first it was the type of crash where the game freezes, but you can't close it with alt f4 or anything. Then it started crashing with a black screen, losing VGA connection. When rebooting, would not post with a VGA error light on the motherboard. Now I absolutely cannot get the PC to post with the monitor plugged into the 3080, and the 3080 is not listed in device manager. It's not under display adapters, nor is there any unknown devices. Trying to install the latest nvidia driver gives me "No nvidia GPU is detected on your system. ...could not find compatible hardware." While using the integrated graphics, I found a newer BIOS version. (the last time I updated the bios was only 2 months ago in April.) I tried updating the BIOS, and that didnt fix it. Before it stopped posting, I used OCCT to test the GPU, and on a 3D adaptive extreme test, I got 615 errors in just two minutes. I might try buying a new riser cable as a last resort. But I'm afraid the card really is dead.
Things I've tried:
  • Reseating both the 3080 in the riser cable, and the riser cable in the motherboard
  • Changing the display port cable
  • Tired all three display ports on the GPU
  • Uninstalling nvidia driver with DDU and reinstalling driver (cant reinstall, no GPU detected)
  • Updating the bios
  • Disabling windows defender and firewall
  • Using the recovery feature to disable driver signature enforcement

If you can mount GPU into PCIe slot without riser cable try different slot as well if that fails

I've got soft tubing, so I can move the GPU, but to fit it in the top pcie slot is pulling on and pinching one of the tubes pretty bad.
Not for nothing, have you checked to make sure the water block didn't leak on anything? I did not see you post about checking that.
I didn't see any leaks while I was moving the card around to mess with the vertical mount. The orange fluid would be pretty easy to see, and I check for leaks every time I start the PC since it's on a semi truck.

This changes things a LOT.

Among such issue as vibration and shock, what are you using to power a rig requiring this much overhead? Some truck stop AC/DC converter may not be the best solution in a case like this. And yes, I am assuming some things here, but would be interested to know what is going on with the power supply side of this situation.

I'm using a Weize 2000w pure sine wave inverter, 14awg extension cord, surge protector, and 14awg PC power cord. On the inverter display, it outputs 119-120V, and under a gaming load, the PC only pulls about 650-700w. When the truck is moving, the PC is shutdown with the PSU switched off. I've also used threadlocker on the motherboard screws. I checked, and none are loose. I haven't had any problems before this, and this issue occurred while I've been stopped for several days getting repairs done. So the truck hasn't moved for more than 30 minutes a day the last five days.
 
That converter comes up on Amazon. That is all, and it is no longer available. The reviews show a solid 20% of those unsatisfied with the product. There does not appear to be any other mention of that converter, anywhere.

For the troubleshooting aspect of this it may be better to get yourself on mains. Aside from that part, list complete build hardware including the power supply and age, please.

Yeah their website no longer lists power inverters. I guess they stopped producing them. I bought the inverter in August of '23, but didn't install it for a few months. I've had no complaints or issues with it. The PSU I'm using is an EVGA G5 1000w I bought in November of 2020. The PC has only been on the truck for 5-6 months, and I've had no issues until now.

Try moving the ribbon cable into another slot I would assume the cable before the GPU check the PCB for any cracks along the edge of the PCI card and any swollen caps. Or burn marks

I agree with this put it on the mains to even remove this as a possibility.
 
After shutting the system down and having the PSU switched off overnight, I was able to boot the system with the GPU connected again. The 3080 was detected in device manager as the default Microsoft device. So I installed nvidia driver version 555.99. After installing that driver I did not restart, and did an OCCT Adaptive Extreme test and got 215 errors in 20 minutes. I then restarted the system and did the same test again, this time only getting 50-60 errors in 25 minutes. But this time when I stopped the test, the PC crashed with a black screen, and wouldn't post on restart with a VGA error light on the mobo.
 
It looks like my issue was caused by the riser cable, instead of the GPU. I was luckily passing by a micro center, so I picked up a new riser cable, and installed it. So far, I haven't had any more crashes, and OCCT reported zero errors after a couple 20+ minute 3D Adaptive Extreme tests.
