I think my Grub Menu is messed up?

A while ago, I installed Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows, and all was good at the time. But then I looked at someone else's dual boot setup (same os'es) Windows 8 and Ubuntu. He could go up and down and select his desired OS. But for me, Ubuntu appears at the top of the list, and in order for me to run Windows, I have to go into the System Setup at the bottom of the grub menu and select my HDD. IF this helps I installed Ubuntu on a seperate partition, because it did not detect Windows

Its not working. I opened terminal in Ubuntu and typed these exact words: 'sudo update-grub' and pressed enter. It didnt say anything, but took the command

When you give the command "sudo" you are declaring yourself the administrator, as the only user that'd be you and it should then ask you your password. if the password is correct it will then process the command, in this case update-grub, and after it runs it should return back to the prompt you~$ and above you'll see a report of what it found. It should not take but a few seconds.
