So today, my computer froze while I was in Steam. It didn't BSOD or give any errors... it just completely froze and was unresponsive. I restarted the computer, and when the desktop came up, there was no background wallpaper... just black. So this checked my SSD, and I'm not entirely sure how to make sense of all of it, but I am concerned about the things like "deleting corrupt attribute" and what not. So then I do a little research and download CrystalDiskInfo and run that. To my dismay it shows a health status of "Caution" for the HDD, while the SSD says "Good 94%". The "caution" yellow bits are the C5 and C6 of the HDD, where it lists the current pending sector count and the uncorrectable sector count. Again I can't make too much sense of this information, but from the research I've done thus far, a raw value of 14 for those is not good?

So what's going on? It definitely looks like I might need to RMA my HDD if there are bad sectors on it, but what about my initial inkling that there was an issue with my SSD? I feel like those windows disk checks upon startup have been happening more frequently, but wouldn't that indicate a possible issue with the boot drive SSD and not the storage HDD? Could both drives be crapping out? I also saw that shoddy PSUs could result in these kinds of things, but I bought a pretty good PSU... I know better than to skimp on that.

What do you suggest be my course of action? Run more diagnostics? Certainly back up all my data (although I'm running into a whole bunch of other fun issues with this stupid WD external drive that doesn't seem to want to cooperate). Please HELP!!!

You can go to the WD website for information on looking up the warranty status of the drive and actually RMA'ing it. I did one with a Seagate drive a while back (2 years into a 3 year warranty) and they sent me back a drive which hasn't had a problem and it was pretty painless. WD might be a bit different so YMMV.

For the SSD:

I didn't see anything bad in it at all. No reallocated sectors, spare area untouched, no bad blocks.

What might have happened is the OS was happily humming along, then tried to access the HDD, had a bad sector, stalled, crashed, and then when you reset you had a bunch of files open on the SSD which went wonky. Thus the integrity check had a lot of cleaning up to do.

Hey there, @N8man3!

I'm really sorry to see you struggle with the WD Black HDD. 🙁 It does seem like you have some sectors that are waiting to be re-mapped. Once you backup all your data from it to the external drive, try running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows as well.
If there are still errors in the SMART attributes afterwards, you should definitely check your warranty status here, as @Rookie_MIB suggested.
If the WD HDD is still covered, get in touch with our Customer Support for further assistance with the RMA procedure.
