So, for some reason the internet (connected to school wifi through ethernet) suddenly stopped working. Kept giving me a "Your Network is not private / net:: err cert common name invalid" error. So I tried connecting through wifi (still through my router) instead of ethernet. This time it asked me for my school id/password (it never did before), and I entered it in (because I really needed internet to turn an assignment in). Not only did the wifi work, all of the sudden the ethernet connection also worked again.

I tried to "Forget" the wifi network connection and reconnected to it again, and this time it didn't need my credentials anymore. Could this mean they somehow "remembered" my router and they can now spy on all my activities? Would a vpn still work?

(this is dorm internet btw)

Its the campus' own internet, they can see everything that you do, and you agree to that by using their service.
Generally speaking they are going to be sitting there watching what you do, but if you do things that violate your agreement with the campus/illegal activities (IE piracy) they will know and terminate service.

My college was the same way, you use their network you play by their rules.
This includes campus wifi, ethernet, and routers plugged into their ethernet as well.
