I tried Overclocking RAM yesterday and it seemed to have failed.

I enabled XMP and then tried different settings, up from my default 1600mhz. My RAM is Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz DDR3, btw.

I tried 1866 mhz, 2000 mhz and 2133 mhz. I also upped the voltage from 1.5v to 1.65v, and I loosened the timings from 9-9-9-24 to 10-10-10-31. When I saved these settings and exited the BIOS, the computer failed to properly reboot. It attempted to reboot several times and when it finally worked, my RAM had went down to 1333 mhz (I assume it downclocks upon a failed overclock).

Since that didn't work out, I put all of my settings to default (1600 mhz, 1.5v, 9-9-9-24). I tried tightening my timings, first putting them at 8-9-8-24. This time an even more disastrous failured happened. My computer wouldn't even go past the motherboard splash screen! After a few minutes of panicking, I found a fix: I had to reset the CMOS by pulling out the CLEARCMOS1 jumper and putting it on the second and third pins. Then I held the power button for 15 seconds and put it back on the first two. My computer booted up normally, I put on my CPU overclock of 4.1 ghz and went back to using it as normal.

My motherboard is a Asrock z77 pro3 and my cpu is a i5 3570k @ 4.1 ghz, stock voltage.

What do you guys think went wrong? Is my motherboard just horrible for RAM oc'ing, and/or did I lose the lotto with my four RAM sticks?

Solution
Hi gooeymonster :)

OK I believe your RAM is Corsair Vengeance — 16GB Dual/Quad Channel DDR3 (CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9)
If so then check your XMP profile in CPUz under the SPD tab where your XMP profile will be listed.
Write them down then go into your Bios.
Observe the Command rate which may be set to 1, change it to 2.
Enter the Primary Timings and Secondary Timings manually if they vary from your XMP profile.
They should work at 1.5V Dram Voltage however sometimes a slight increase is needed also to VCCSA, which is system agent voltage and will assist the IMC on your chip.
