So i bought my pc like 2 years ago from some guy off craiglist. I just updated it and well i am now i have no back ground and i keep getting messages of windows now being genuine. I am trying to run the genuine validation thing from microsoft's website. However it's taking about an hour so i don't think it's working.

Is there anything else i can do?

Solution
Try this:

Activate Windows 7 manually:
1. Click Start, and in the Search box type : slui.exe 4
2. Press ENTER on your Keyboard
3. Select your Country.
4. Select the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person.
Windows is showing as “Not-Genuine”

Just did some more searching, seems MGADiag is used a lot for this. So maybe this will help. Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0):

While Craig's List is a scary place to buy anything with any level of confidence, if it didn't pop up the not genuine before, it's kinda weird that it took 2 years to pop up. Perhaps the guy sold it to you and since then he diug it out of a drawer and used it for his own upgrade ?

Well this happened right after i downloaded and installed windows updates. I ended up having to take my pc to the shop because of my graphic's card having trouble.

Also no it doesn't this was a pc the guy custom made. I wanted a custom pc since i felt it was easier to get into making my own with a custom built one.

Is this a custom build that you purchased or an off-the-shelf system (Dell, HP, Acer, etc...)?

If it's an off the shelf system, the OS (assuming it's the original OS) should still be valid and you'd just need to reactivate. If online doesn't work (as it sounds like it's not), you should just contact Microsoft over the phone to reactivate.

If it's a custom build, then there is a fair chance that the product key has been blacklisted, but the process would still be the same in that you'd need to contact Microsoft. This time, instead of walking you through the activation, they'll just tell you it's not a valid key and you will need to purchase a new one.

Well it is a custom one, and the problem i am having is. I don't know the product key the guy never gave me it.

Per the license agreement, the person selling the system with Windows installed was required to provide you with the product key. The ideal situation has you contacting that individual for the product key he sold to you.

Failing that, I would recommend using a third party software package like Magic Jelly Bean to retrieve your product key. Then contact Microsoft to attempt to have your OS activated.

How do i go about contacting microsoft about this? I have never messed with windows or anything really. :/
