Question I upgraded my CPU and my PC won't boot

I recently upgraded from a Pentium G4560 to an i5 9400f. I installed the processor and the system wouldn't boot. The system would turn on for a second than immediately turn off. I reinstalled the old processor and it worked fine. I tried updating the BIOS and resetting the CMOS but neither worked. One thing which might be the problem is when I first installed the i5 and it wasnt working I removed the heatsink from on top of the processor and loosened it. Then when I booted it my PC turned on fine except there was no image and I couldn't turn it off via the on/off button.

I would really appreciate if any one had any idea of how to fix this. Or at least tell me if I broke the processor.

Your motherboard probably is not compatible with your new processer

and the motherboard cpu support list have 9400f? and your motherboard have the bios version for it?

That's weird because the i5 has the right socket for my motherboard

However if you tried putting that cpu in a pentium motherboard it is possible you bent a cpu pin

I checked and it didn't look like any we're bent also the Pentium processor still worked

No the b250m ds3h supports 7th and 6th gen processors. The i5 9400f is a 9th gen cpu.

That's a common "gotcha" that's caught out many novice builders. A matching CPU & socket is no guarantee of compatibility --- CPU must also be supported by the BIOS. Only way to nail it is to check the motherboard manufacturer's compatibiliy list.

your hypothetical 'last stop' (upgrade-wise)on a B250 is a 7700/7700K.... (youc an always reinstall the G4560, add a few drives, and use it as a NAS)

But as a new B360 MB or even Z390 costs less, that would sure seem to be the preferred way to go....
