i wana know that why there are separate wires for sound and mic so if i will use the cable of headphones will mic wont't work

do headphones with microphones only work together when they have single plug in what if the wire is same but plot is two will it wont work and why there are option of such a thing if we can't use both at the same time should i buy one with single plug in

There are quite a few plug configurations for the 1/8" plug style.

Headphones and a microphone will work together on a single plug with FOUR conductors.

OR

They can work with each having it's own plug. Then the headphones would have THREE conductors on the plug and the microphone would have TWO conductors on the plug.
