I have a i5-6600k at stock with a MSI GTX 980. Running with 16gb of DDR4 and a 600 gold+ PSU. A couple months back I got a 144hz 1080p monitor. I was wondering what GPU I should get to run my games at ultra with a high FPS rate around 120 or higher. I know I have a possible bottlekneck issue with getting a higher end GPU. But any info would help. I was loooking at maybe a GTX 1080ti or even a RTX 2070. I know I could possibly also run the games at 2k so the CPU doesn’t hold back the GPU. Also maybe I can overclock my CPU though that’s something I’d have to put some research into. Any info would help and I’d like to thank everyone in advance!

the 6600K, even if at 4.5-4.6 GHz all core, having only 4c/4t, will begin to suffer in some of newest games....; most look at 8700K/9700K as starting points when wanting 144 Hz rigs...(The 7700K did the job as well, but, will suffer when/if streaming is added)

And, generally, it takes a 1080Ti (the 2070 might get you there in most games) to consistently get 144 fps unless lowering settings with lesser cards...

yes if i set my games to low settings on 1080p i can easily achieve 144 frames but i would like to see the beauty of the games i play with that refresh rate lol

would getting a 8700 cut it? the 8700k is about $80 us dollars more. i would rather not overclock anything if i dont have to.

That would be a test to see if your CPU can cope, as you improve the visual settings the CPU load doesn't increase much, so if you can hit 144 at low graphics then your CPU is most likely capable *on the games you play*. Sorry if you misunderstood that.

youre so right that it killed my whole mood of wanting to upgrade my pc......

If the games you are playing can achieve 144 fps by lowering video settings, then you are simply GPU-limited, and I'd be looking at the 2060 perhaps....which about equals the 1070 Ti...a big step up from a GTX980...
