i want to add an ssd to my older emachines EL1358g-51w using the PCie slot.
it has an AthlonII X2 220 / 2.8 GHz dual core processor with the
NVIDIAGeForce 6150 chipset and 8 gig memory. Has a lite on 220 watt ps (PS 5221-9)
The motherboard had no M.2 slots on motherboard and no available bays for additional drives.
It has (2) PCIe slots on motherboard. PCIe x 1 and PCIe x 16.
I want to use the PCIe slot(s) to install either a SATA or NVMe Boot drive.
Computer came with Windows7 home installed but has been updated to Windows 10 (64 bit).
Can anyone tell me what I can and cant do? KE4HIE

NVME won't work for you as it needs bios support to be bootable. It would work fine as a secondary drive though.

Sadly, the only way you are going to get full speed out of an SSD is to buy a newer system.

You also wont be able to get full SSD speed out of your old system, though you can get it to be bootable by moving an HDD or two to an add-in controller card (as long as they are not in raid) and installing the SSD to the motherbd sata port.

if you have a SATA SSD and want to add it in your system you could use something like this PCIE card that give you 1 SATA or M.2 connectors to choose from M.2 or SATA Drive to install in your system

or if you have a SATA SSD already on hand use this one that permit more options. but more costly

finally just get a PCIE M.2 drive (this one is 512GB SSD on PCIE Slot Card)
