well as far as monitor i dont really care if i use my 20"crt monitor unless you think updating will improve something dont really know what would be a best resolution for first person shooter games some of the labor intensive games that are out. and as far as parts well it will be a ground up comp. O and as for a case dont care either for hi end case unless its nessasary for cooling dont care for looks so cutting price on case is fine with me. thanks for help.

Here's an idea:
GA-EP45-UD3P $115 (at www.newegg.com)
G.Skill PI Black 2x2GB DDR2-800 $55
PC Power & Cooling 750W $80
CoolerMaster RC-690 $80
WD6401AALS $80
E8500 $188

That leaves about $400 for GPU(s). That is enough for a HD 4870 X2 or two HD 4870 1GB, I guess.

If you can stretch the budget to $1100 you can even get a GTX 295, the best card available these days.

What's the resolution on your 20" CRT? I suspect it's more than the 1680x1050 usually seen on LCD 20" monitors.

well i would like to play GTA4 not sure what fsx is but if quad cpu is what i need for gta4 in highest settings then im all good with that now should i spend most of my money in graphics card or even it out between cpu and ram for some reason in my head i was thinking may be i can get a decent cpu and most of the money in graphics card so unsure as to componets i should use for the games you sudjested another game i would like to play in high settings would be bio shark and fear 2

FSX is Flight Simulator X.

The Q9550 is $280. It would help in GTA4, but the E8500 is cheaper and beats it in all other games. TBH I don't know what you should do here. If you think GTA4 will be just a few weeks and that's it then get the E8500. If you expect to make a mania out of it like I did with Diablo 2 then definitely the Q9550.

You could also get the Q9550 and a single HD 4870 1GB now, and add a second card later if you expect to save $200 more in the next few months.

hmm so like i suspected most of the cash should go to the graphics yeah as far as gta it might only be for few weeks and i was planing on later on sli the card for some extra performance so q9550 would probably suit me better lol graphics to me is always the hardest disition for me to make at least i have some starting points to check out thanks for the ideas

You can see or change the resolution from Control Panel (choose Display, then Settings).

I think WR2 is right, it's most likely 1600x1200. At that resolution the GTX 295 and HD 4870 X2 are way overkill, never mind that.
