I want to connect a USB or extra hard drive to my router to make a simple NAS but my router doesn't have a USB port on it. Will connecting either of the drives to and open ethernet port with connectors work?

No, you would have to connect a drive that supports an Ethernet connection like a Western Digital My Cloud external drive.

Spend $20 on the this classic "tomato" router, USB port, 1gb eth, n-wireless (since your cur. router is not usb it ain't ac either) runs all the open source firmware, DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT, and FreeWRT, imo tomato is the tastiest, and amazon warehouse has it for $20 so if you have prime you'll have it in 2 days..
