Hello,
I've been using Nvidia GTX 970 for about a year now and I have a used Sapphire HD7870XT resting over my wardrobe. I want to sell it but how can I be sure if it's still working? If I just remove my current GPU temporarily then install HD7870XT and if it boots up, is it good to go? Do I need to uninstall nvidia driver and install radeon drivers before testing it?

Solution
Yes, everything stated is correct. I would Uninstall Nvidia drivers, install card, install Radeon drivers, and stress the card with a benchmark software like Heaven benchmark 4.0. If you see no artifacts or shut downs during benchmarking process, I would consider it sellable.
