I want to upgrade my phenom 965 black edition, but to what?

I was considering stepping into the Intel market with a Pentium G3258 but will I lose performance with my current phenom cup? I have a mother board that will accept an fx6300 (biostar A960D+)

With this upgrade I'm looking at the future so the Pentium would just kick things off. I want an i5 or and i7 by next year so with that said, I would need a good micro atx motherboard that is future proof (I currently have a micro atx case). I may even consider dual booting for a hackintosh considering I use one at work. Any suggestions would be great!

Games that I play over and over are dark souls 1 & 2, hearthstone, skyrim and mass effect. My gpu is a gtx 750 ti superclocked 1gb ddr5. I will upgrade this when and if I upgrade to an i5 or i7.

Or is and the way to go still?

I would suggest an FX 4350, FX 6300 or higher,

that intel pentium misdual core, and you will only see more fps in just a handful of games, nowadays more and more games use more cores, upt to 4, take crysis 3 and battlefield 4, even an fx 4300 is faster than that pentium.

no one should buy a dual core in this age, the fact that everyone praises that pentium so much shows just how blind most fanboys are.
You could slap a 960 onto that processor and ride it out for a little while longer, until you can get the i5/i7/xeon.
The 965 is still fairly capable with an OC, and you would benefit from a new graphics card more so than a new processor.

I would aim for at least a 4590 or higher (Skylake counterparts once they are released very soon)

Just because I made a mistake doesnt mean I cant help other people avoid that, I had an AMD FX 6300 that YES IS SLOWER than an i5, but I could have easily upgarded to an FX 8350 and have a similar experience for almost $100 less, and even my FX 6300 held up very nicely considering it was $150 less, but NO I was deceived by the fanboys and bought an i5, that video is proof, what now you guys hate proof?

It's better for games that can take advantage of 4 threads (read reviews before making a decision). With your GPU selection and the games that you play, the G3258 is fine.

If you decide to go for an i3, then you should consider the i3-4160 or i3-4170. The G3258 is less expensive, but you should factor in the cost of a better cooler to maximize its overclocking potential.

Waste of time upgrading on your current board IMO.
I wouldn't trust it with a 125w 6350 (which is not worth the extra over the 95w 6300 anyway at all)

Your 750ti is currently the weak point not your CPU.

You're honestly getting some poor advice here.

Just to add - the pentium g is an absolute worthless purchase now that games are becoming more & more multithread capable - its cheap because its not a gaming CPU - it never has been & certainly never will be from this point onwards!

So the fx6300 is where I should focus my cpu purchase or are you saying just upgrade the GPU?

I agree. The Biostar A960D+ supports that CPU, but the CPU VRM may cause throttling at full load. To prevent that, I'd get the 95W FX-6300.

I'm saying a GPU upgrade will be massively beneficial whereas a CPU upgrade won't.
Your board is basically lowend - you could run a 6300 on it but to be honest the 965be was one of amd's best ever cpu's.
For your $100 outlay on a 6300 you will gain 10% or so single core performance at best & still be held back by the 750ti.

Upgrading your GPU is the sensible move - should you decide to go full upgrade in the future its a component that can be carried over.

What GPU would you recommend that won't break the bank unless I can use it on a future build?

If there is a good mobo to pair with the fx6300 and a good GPU then I will take that path, just let me know. I prefer the mono to be mATX because I didn't want to buy a new case unless it were an ITX (save desk space). I really appreciate this help, its been helping me in the direction to begin researching.

For a card that's worth carrying over to a future Intel build it has to be a minimum of a gtx 960 or r9 380 unless you can get a good deal on a r9 280/280x.

For gaming at the moment IMO the 965 is still capable - as I said before a GPU upgrade will give you an instant & noticeable performance increase in gaming.

Sounds good to me! I think that I will upgrade my mobo as well for future use and over clocking. Do you have any recommendations?
