Ive had the gtx 970 for a while now and have been feeling the need to upgrade, specifically to the MSI 1070Ti. But im unsure if it will be "bottlenecked" by my current rig ive used the calculator to determine if it will but ive also read that its not entirely accurate. So if I do decide to upgrade should I also update my current processor as recommended or should it be fine?
Current Rig:
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 970
Processor: i5-4960K
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GBx2
HD: WD Black 1TB
MOBO:Z97S SLI Krait edition

A lot will depend on what resolution you game at. Ideally, you'd want to grab the i7-4790K to keep up with the GTX 1070 Ti. But the i5 should handle it at higher resolutions/faster v.refresh where the GPU has more work to do.

Stick with the overclockable i5, it's got a few years left in it. If you can, get a gtx 2070, that will allow you to run 4k 60 fps. At 4k, your processor will not be leaned on as hard, extending its usable life even further than at lower resolutions.

Yeah, instead of getting an i7 4790k and a 1070ti for a total of, what, $650. Get a GTX 2070 and a 500GB Samsung 860 Evo sata SSD for $620.

Do you have a 4k tv? They're way cheaper than 4k pc monitors. Like, you can get a decent 40-43 inch 4k tv for less than $300. Monitors you only get 28" 4k for the same price.

That "calculator" site is terrible and doesn't account for resolution or game, there's way more to it. Your upgrade to a 1070 ti would be fine but if you haven't yet I would recommend overclocking that CPU to around 4.2ghz or faster if possible. This would reduce any "bottleneck" and you'd probably get a few more FPS depending on the game. If your gaming at 1080P you could utilize Nvidia DSR. This will run the game at a higher resolution then scale it back to 1080P, doing so will utilize the GPU more and make your games look smoother.
