Not sure if this is the right forum to post this. Instead of spending $40+ each for several door corner fans to distribute heat in our house I used to use discarded tower fans which worked fine and were already set up to plug into a regular outlet. I no longer have those and don't remember what was done to make them work. Anyone have any tips? I am not an electrician so something simple and straightforward would be great is such exists! Thanks so much.

This, unfortunately is one of those cases where if you have to ask, you shouldn't do it, you aren't an electrician so you need one, or you need to learn to be one. About 20hrs of the right theory and practise time should be enough that you can do this, and only this, with some chance of it being safe.

Sorry to sound harsh, but you do not want to muck around with mains voltage electricity, and telling you what to do remotely with your current level of knowledge is a recipe for someone to help you burn your house down.

You could just get a 7.5V, 9V, or 12V DC power adapter (like this one), strip the fan cables and connect them to adapter end cable. You will need an outlet nearby.
Make sure to connect + and - cables correctly.
Here's a 5-pack
I did something similar on my basement.
The boiler and water heater are enclosed in fireproof tiny room with two small openings.
I installed two 140mm fans (intake and exhaust) on each opening to circulated the air and warm up the basement which is also my office.
I used two power adapters I had laying around, from two routers that had died. I soldered the fan cables to the adater and used heat shrink tubing to cover the soldering. You could use electrical tape.
It worked like a charm.

Take 13thmonkey advice and if you are not comfortable let someone else do it for you...take electricity very seriously.
