I own all 3 of these on basically the same asus board. im running 2 generic 1600 4Gb ram sticks then 2 8GB Corsair pros also 1600. i know from testing that both will downclock to 1333 for the i5. but i cant decide which processor to stick with. I cant afford a new one because i know half the responses will be to upgrade. im stuck with what i got. when checking benchmark sites the amd (Which should be better) flops to the intels. and the i3 has better per core performance than the i5 which is older but the i5 has 4 cores.. im just stuck.

i dont do crazy gaming on this. i play age of empires and sims etc. sim strat games. i have consoles for the heavy stuff. so i just need a streaming, mid gaming office/home performance out of this. i think all 3 are pretty close with pros and cons but i just cant decide which to stick with.

I would use the i5-2400 out of those, as it should still be a reasonably capable processor. The FX processor performs well behind the other options. The i3-3240 and the i5-2400 should perform similar at lightly-threaded workloads, but more modern games will tend to utilize more cores, and the 2400 should pull ahead in those.

Thank you guys! ive been reading stats and benches for days and they are so close that i just wasnt sure. I know my ram will downclock as i had the i3 in a dell board for a while and it downclocked to 1333 so i think it should work out well with the i5

From the benchmarks....I'd go with the i5 as it's the fastest multi core CPU of the bunch....and it's single core speed is just a hair below the i3.....so I'd call that about equal.
I second this:

There's also the turbo on the i5. And 2500k and 2600 processors are getting cheap, which can be a cheap upgrade:

And since you can take 3rd gen processors, the i5-3470 is cheap as well:
