Hello all,
I've never upgraded my CPU before but I definitely need to, so I've come here for buying advice:

I am currently running an Intel i3-4130 processor in a Gigabyte Z97P-D3 motherboard(1150 socket)

So I'm guessing that it would be a good idea to upgrade to a 4/5th gen I5 but I don't know the real differences between different models.

I will be using it for pretty heavy gaming so if that is a factor take it into consideration.

Thank you.

Solution

yes it is of course better choice
if u want to keep using your DDR3 ram
try get the 6th/7th gen intel and b150 that has "D3"
like i suggest before asus b150 pro gaming d3

Budget is looking at £200- £300 but not sure if I can deal with the headache of moving windows onto new mobo?

I'll look into it, so to clarify instead of sticking with the 1150 socket move to an 1151 and get a newer CPU?

A couple notes:

Officially, 6th/7th gen Intel CPUs only support low voltage DDR3 (DDR3L, runs at 1.35V), in contrast to normal 1.5V DDR3 (which is probably what you have). According to Intel, running 1.5V DDR3 can damage the memory controller over time. Whether it's a legitimate risk or just Intel covering their ass, I don't know.

You need to make sure that any 100 series mobo you get has an up to date BIOS that supports 7th gen. For the mobo in the link above, that would be rev 2203 or higher. You can check this by going to the support page for a given mobo and looking at the CPU support list.

@TJhooker,yes thats right but before i upgrade to this specs i use that mobo and have 16gigs apacer black panther 1600mhz ddr3,it is running fine until i sold it separately
IDK if my apacer black panther is DDR3 or DDR3L,but from my personal experience it running fine

For a 'pretty heavy' gamer, with 4th Gen equipment and a limited budget, there's only 2 choices that make any sense. i7-4790k or Xeon E3-1270v3.
An i5 isn't much better than the i3+HT you have now, you NEED threads and only the i7 and Xeons have them.

Yes, but my point was that it only supports that CPU with BIOS rev 2203 or higher, and you have no idea what BIOS rev it would ship with without contacting the retailer. Given how long ago that BIOS rev was released I'd say you should be fine, but I can't say for sure.
