I wouldn't recommend Nvidia, at the price points you are going to be looking at. AMD has the price/performance crown in all but the highest end cards. GTX 980 and 970 have managed to shake things up a bit, price wise at the high end. Until Nvidia fills out their 9 series product line, I cannot recommend anything Nvidia, for low to midrange cards. The exception would be the GTX 750ti, if your PSU is not very stellar.
