Hello guys!
I got to choose between a i3-4160 and a Phenom II x4 965, same price for the whole pc both have 8gb ram 1tb hdd.

The i3 has a motherboard wtih only 2 slots for ram and no PCI
The 965 has a motherboard wtih 4 slots for ram and 2 PCI
Both are gigabyte ( idk exact model )

I am planning to oc the 965, if i get it.

I'm mostly going to be gaming with it.

Quite important i say, i got a 7.1 soundcard laying around which would be nice to use with it

Not going to upgrade, any of them this is a temporary pc for me which my dad will use after i get enough money to buy a new ryzen setup.

Yes, they both got 16x pci-e.

No doubt, the i3 option is better.

I3-4160 has a passmark rating of 5047 for all threads and 2076 for single thread. Single thread is most important for games.
Phenom II X4-965 has a rating of 4205/1184; not good for gaming.

Both are dual channel capable, so there is no advantage to more than 2 ram slots.

The intel motherboard will come with some sort of sound capability.
5.1 at least, some with more.

And, you will need less money for an upgrade. since a lga1150 motherboard can accommodate a I7-4790k as a very strong cpu upgrade.

thats right. soundcards nowadays are a moot point now with 5.1 encoding sound on most motherboards. what you are doing is counter-entuitive. at best.

Tomorrow i will have both PCs here to benchmark and i will decide which one to keep. Got the model for the i3 mobo btw GA-H81M-S1, which has a realtek ALC887 soundcard, i doubt it's better than my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer SB0770
