Hello everyone! Im completely new to overclocking, so i would love some help.
Im going to buy an i3 8350k, and overclock it. Im also running a gigabyte g1 970. So what i want to know is, will the 450 Watt powersupply i currently have, be enough to power an overclocked i3 8350k and an overclocked 970?

Solution
Who knows ?? You haven't listed what your PSU actually is.

It could be a crappy cit unit or a corsair vs450 in which case Id say no.

Or it could be a newer corsair cx450 or even a seasonic gold in which case id say yes no issue at all

The system would likely use below 250w while gaming, when overclocked. How is 450w not enough?

Overclocked i3 8350k 100-150w
Overclocked gtx 970 200-300w
+ rest of the system and peripherals
Add to that the degradation of the psu over time and a 450w won't be enough.

Not sure where you found your information, though a decently overclocked 970 only uses ~190w while gaming.
Overclocked 8350k uses ~70w while gaming.

Rest of the build would probably consume around 40w.

That's ~300w while gaming with moderate - high overclocking.

A quality 450w unit, would is capable.

LMAO
I'd like to know what you were smoking when you though of those numbers.

190w for gtx 970? only on stock speeds.
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_970_Gaming/25.html
Add the oc to that and it'll be a LOT more

70w for the i3 8350k? are you kidding me? the damn thing is already rated for 91w tdp by Intel.

power draw jumps by nearly 100w when overclocked LUL, that's pretty far from your "70w"

"I'd like to know what you were smoking when you though of those numbers"

Air? Seriously, I linked you the reviews/evidence...

"190w for gtx 970? only on stock speeds."

No. Average for stock speeds is 168w in the review you linked which is the same as one I linked. OC adds 22w, look on the second link (168 + 22 is unsurprisingly 190).

In the third link I posted clearly states the i3 8350k at 4.8GHz while running Total Warhammer consumes 71.34w. It isn't "my 70w"...

That link you posted takes the power consumption from the wall which can be misleading as more parts than the CPU are added and it doesn't account PSU efficiency. Also those tests were done at 100% CPU load. I used the term "gaming load" for a reason.
Not sure how accurate those overclocking results are from bit tech, considering numerous other reviews don't find the CPU power increase that high. For example: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-coffee-lake-i7-8700k-cpu,5252-12.html

Lastly, TDP is not power consumption...

Literally the second link you posted:
graph-power.jpg

Also, as i stated with in my second link, the i3 systems power draw was whole 93w higher when the cpu was ocd to 5.1GHz compared to stock speeds NOT that the 180w power draw came only from the cpu.

What am I supposed to even look at that chart? the fact that 3200MHz ram uses more power than 2400MHz ram? or the fact that i3 8350k uses more power than the i3 8100?

So it uses nearly as much power as an i7 8700k? is that what you're trying to say?
Would you use a 450w psu to power an i7 8700k and an overclocked gtx 970?

All I'm saying is that op will find his 450w psu to be a limiting factor when overclocking, the near peak load will also degrade the psus components fast and eventually the psu will break.
The end
Case closed

That's the 8700k at stock. Not many people would use it at stock, though if they did, I'd say yes to a quality 450w unit.

What I've been saying is the system would use 300w at most from the PSU. Though we still don't know what PSU it is. The electrical performance of the PSU also determines how well the system can overclock. Nor did they say what the PC is being use for.

To answer OP's question about how much power the 8350k consumes when overclocked, under a gaming load it's ~70w. Under a very high load, ~110w.
