Hi,

I have an i3 6100 with a 1060 3gb and overall the performance is great at 1080p, however some games like Fallout 4, Nier Automata and Witcher 3 drop below 50 fps at times.

Since Cybermonday and Black Friday are nearby, I wanted to know if I can solve this by purchasing either Ryzen 5 2600 or the new i5 8th generation, I am ready to update the motherboard and ddr4 ram as well if necessary, however I want to get the most cost effective set up for this.

I was also thinking of getting the 1070, however that may be an overkill for 1080p.

Thanks,

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the skylake I3 6100 utilize DDR4? I would suggest getting a better CPU first and then later a better GPU. The 2 cores of the I3 are more limiting than the gtx 1060 3gb, so i would go for a new CPU. Most modern games are utilizing many cores, and in some cases, a hyperthreaded 4 core can even struggle in some high-end builds running modern games, making the 6100 unfit. An R5 2600 would be most comparable 8th gen I5 8400, while the r5 2600 is $50 (over 30%) cheaper than the I5 especially once you figure in platform cost. The R5 2600 offers 6 cores and 12t (6 threads more than I5) and a higher turbo clock than the I5, as well as overclocking support, something the I5 lacks. The 2600s Wraith Stealth...

The 2600s Wraith Stealth cooler is also a bit better than the Intel stock cooler. I have my Ryzen 3 1200 (Same TDP as 2600, meaning you should expect simmilsr performance) overclocked by +600mhz on the AMD wraith stealth cooler, running at about 60c in games, while remaining quiet. The I5 is marginally better in games, something you will not see with any reasonable gpu, while the R5 2600 offers better multi-core performance, something make everything snappy in everyday tasks. You can see a test of both cpus here: https://www.techspot.com/review/1627-core-i5-8400-vs-ryzen-5-2600/
