Hello,

So I'm getting a new laptop to use for work, and I'm going to be programming and using Microsoft Office. Which would run better? Celeron or i3? Which is recommended more?

Solution
Go with the Core i3. While a laptop with that CPU will cost a little more than a laptop with a Celeron, the Core i3 is definitely more powerful. That means you would be less likely to buy a new laptop in the near future due to performance issues. So... spend a little more now to potentially save yourself a lot more in the near future.

Core i3 is better by miles. But if you want price to performance equality, Get the Pentium G4560. Its a dual-core processor with hyper threading, which basically uses the operating system to simulate 2 extra cores and therefore perform very similarly to a Core i3 but for a few bucks cheaper.

that is a desktop CPU. the OP is looking for a laptop

Crap. I guess I didn't read the description. Got to work on that more. To the original poster, core I3 is still better on most if not all fronts. Pretty much everything people are saying about the celerons here is absolutely right. Go with the core I3 you will be much happier down the road.
