i3 is it any good for gaming

Hi I'm new to pc so I just want know I'm looking to build a gaming pc I'm on a tight budget of about R3500 or R4000 is the i3 cpu any good for gaming I'm looking to play new games so ill rather pay more money for a better GPU?

Yep it's good. I've been using a i3 with a HD7950 until I upgrade to Haswell. Right now I'm maxxing everything.

haswell is the latest, from old(er) to current: sandy,ivy,.. haswell. sandy is old but still good
give more budget for the gpu, of course try to balance things as much as possible. but give a little more for the gpu (money-wise)

i3's are OK, but with games starting to take advantage of more cores, you might be better of going with an FX 6300 if you can get one for a decent price.
