I3 vs i5 for gaming

I'm looking to buy my first gaming pc but with a very small budget, around £420 for the lot including monitor and keyboard. I already have a mouse so that doesn't need to be bought. I am going to be buying it of ginger 6 and have found 2 set ups to look at. The pc is only going to be used for light gaming. Nothing like BF3 as I have an xbox for me and my mates to go on online. I would like to be able to Day Z at 1080p with at least 30 fps as that is what I am used to for my xbox. These are the important specs.

PC number 1 for £360.

Intel Core i3 3220 (2x 3.30Ghz) HD 2500
Asus P8B75-M LX - B75, SATA600, USB3.0, PCI-E 3.0
8gb Kingston DDR3 1333mhz (2x 4gb)
500gb SATA3 Hard Drive (UDMA 600)

Intel Core i5 2400 (4x 3.1ghz) 6mb Cache
Asus P8B75-M LX - B75, SATA600, USB3.0, PCI-E 3.0
8gb Kingston DDR3 1333mhz (2x 4gb)
500gb SATA3 Hard Drive (UDMA 600)
1GB ATI Radeon HD 7750 - DVI, HDMI, DP, DX11


As i have already said I have a wireless mouse and have found a wireless keyboard for very cheap. http://www.dclstore.co.uk/computers/samsung-aa-sk1pwub-wireless-keyboard-2.4-ghz-wireless/ and I am going to get my monitor from my school technicians as they have lots of monitors pilled up high.

I have used game debate to check to the cheapest one and it said it would be able to play games at high settings with no problem, I have also asked the day z forums and was told that it could play at high settings with 40+fps. I just don't' want to buy anything else further down the line as I aren't very good inside PC's.

Get the i5 system to be future proof, games like battlefield 3 are starting to use all 4 cores.

Also, if you're going be using it for gaming, try to get at least a 7770, the first system will be better than the second if a 7770 is in it.

Since you are going for a 3rd-gen motherboard, you could go with i5-3330 and DDR3-1600.

Of course, considering how messed up prices tend to be in the UK vs NA, this could be more expensive than it should be. If you shop around, you may be able to shave costs... I often find the stuff I want on Newegg for 5-10% cheaper at local stores when I take the time to look.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, thank you for the info but i can't afford that. I know it would be the best option but it is way out off my price range. I don't want to install anything myself into the pc other than programs. I am going to get it all of Ginger6 so I don't have to go inside it. Out of the 2 spec lists which would you go for if you had a very low budget of around £400?

Do you think it would be better to get pc no1 and put a HD 7770 instead of a HD 7750

I would go with the first build, with the 7770. It will perform great for gaming and you will have the lga 1155 socket for upgrading later, to something like an i5 3570.

when you are so tight on budget.....go for the 1st setup but at least upgrade to 7770 if you want decent fps.

what psu are you intending to use by the way???

the second pc is also lga 1155. its sandy bridge while first one is ivy bridge. so both will support an upgrade to i5-3570k .
however if he purchases the 2nd pc he wont need to upgrade at all

I understand, and he said he was on a tight budget, including keyboard and monitor, so pc 1 will better fit his budget, and while still having a decent cpu he can spend a little more on a gpu, as most games rely on a gpu more than the cpu for performance, assuming he is playing those games. Your point is completely valid though.

OP is planning to buy a B75 board so non-K is as good as it gets.

Personally though, the idea of buying a $125 throw-away CPU because I can't afford a $185 CPU (local price for i5-3470) but plan to upgrade to it later seems a little silly. Better off waiting a few weeks longer (unless that isn't an option) and going with the i5 off-the-bat.

If I absolutely had to go down the temporary CPU route for reasons such as my PCs went up in smoke and I need a zero-day replacement on a tight budget, I'd go with a Pentium G5xx for ~$55 so I'd be $70 closer to upgrading it to i5.
